Vluchtelingenstroom 31

If America is the culmination of Western white civilization, as everyone from the Left to the Right declares, then there must be something terribly wrong with Western white civilization. This is a painful truth; few of us want to go that far… The truth is that Mozart, Pascal, Boolean algebra, Shakespeare, parliamentary government, baroque churches, Newton, the emancipation of women, Kant, Marx, Balanchine ballets, et al., don't redeem what this particular civilization has wrought upon the world. The white race is the cancer of human history; it is the white race and it alone — its ideologies and inventions—which eradicates autonomous civilizations wherever it spreads, which has upset the ecological balance of the planet, which now threatens the very existence of life itself.
Susan Sonntag. Partisan Review. Eerste kwartaal 1967

As for the Taliban fighters, they not only don't cherish life, they expend it freely in suicide bombings. It's difficult to envisage an American suicide bomber.' He asserts: 'There is really no such thing as an American suicide bomber. We don't extol the bomber and parade his or her children before the TV cameras so that other children will envy them for the death of a parent. This is downright repugnant.' Then he adds complacently, 'Maybe we have come to cherish life too much.'

So what is 'odd,' 'chilling,' and 'repugnant is being ready to die in the struggle and find glory in so doing. The old idol of martial sacrifice, falling directly from its pedestal into the enemy clutches, has become utterly repellent, the epitome of moral horror. Sacrifice, at once incomprehensible and ignoble and immediately interpreted as scorn for life (without any sense that it may, on the contrary, imply scorn for death), is opposed by an ethic based on a love of life — of which the drone surely represents the ultimate expression. As an ultimate affectation (onnatuurlijkheid. svh), we admit that we love life so much that we do perhaps overprotect it. This excessive love would certainly be excusable were it not that so much self-complacency (zelfingenomenheid. svh) hints at self-love. For, contrary to Cohen's claims, it is certainly OUR lives, not life in general, that we hold so dear. If the case of an  American kamikaze seems to be inconceivable, that is because it would be an oxymoron. Here life could not possibly be denied, for the very good reason that the only life that is denied is that of others.

When questioned by a journalist in order to find out if it was 'true that Palestinians were not concerned about human life, not even that of those close to them,' Eyad El-Sarraj (bekende Palestijnse psychiater. svh), the director of the mental health program in Gaza, replied, 'How can you believe in your own humanity if you do not believe in the humanity of the enemy?'

In what respect might it be less horrible to kill without exposing oneself than to share the fate of one's victims? In what respect might a weapon making it possible to kill without danger be less repugnant than the opposite? Jacqueline Rose (Britse Professor of Humanities at the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities. svh), amazed that 'dropping cluster bombs from the air is not only less repugnant, it is somehow deemed by Western leaders at least to be morally superior,' asks herself why 'dying with your victim should be seen as a greater sin than saving yourself.'

The disconnect between last Tuesday's monstrous dose of reality and the self-righteous drivel and outright deceptions being peddled by public figures and TV commentators is startling, depressing.  The voices licensed to follow the event seem to have joined together in a campaign to infantilize the public.  Where is the acknowledgement that this was not a 'cowardly' attack on 'civilization' or 'liberty' or 'humanity' or 'the free world' but an attack on the world's self-proclaimed super-power, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions? How many citizens are aware of the ongoing American bombing of Iraq? And if the word 'cowardly' is to be used, it might be more aptly applied to those who kill from beyond the range of retaliation, high in the sky, than to those willing to die themselves in order to kill others.  In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday's slaughter, they were not cowards...

The unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides (banaliteiten. svh) of a Soviet Party Congress seemed contemptible. The unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators in recent days seems, well, unworthy of a mature democracy.

Whatever actions this administration undertakes to limit the damage of the widening revelations of the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib and elsewhere -- trials, courts-martial, dishonorable discharges, resignation of senior military figures and responsible administration officials and substantial compensation to the victims -- it is probable that the 'torture' word will continue to be banned. To acknowledge that Americans torture their prisoners would contradict everything this administration has invited the public to believe about the virtue of American intentions and America's right, flowing from that virtue, to undertake unilateral action on the world stage.

The expression of satisfaction at the acts of torture one is inflicting on
helpless, trussed, naked victims is only part of the story. There is the primal
satisfaction of being photographed, to which one is more inclined to respond
not with a stiff, direct gaze (as in former times) but with glee. The events are
in part designed to be photographed. The grin is a grin for the camera. There
would be something missing if, after stacking (opstapelen, svh) the naked men, you couldn't
take a picture of them.

People do these things to other people. Not just in Nazi concentration camps
and in Abu Ghraib when it was run by Saddam Hussein Americans, too, do
them when they have permission. When they are told or made to feel that
those over whom they have absolute power deserve to be mistreated,
humiliated, tormented. They do them when they are led to believe that the
people they are torturing belong to an inferior, despicable race or religion.
For the meaning of these pictures is not just that these acts were performed,
but that their perpetrators had no sense that there was anything wrong in
 what the pictures show.
The charges against most of the people detained in the prisons in Iraq and
Afghanistan being nonexistent — the Red Cross reports that 70 to 90 percent
of those being held seem to have committed no crime other than simply being
in the wrong place at the wrong time, caught up in some sweep of 'suspects'
— the principal justification for holding them is 'interrogation.'
Interrogation about what? About anything. Whatever the detainee might
know. If interrogation is the point of detaining prisoners indefinitely, then
physical coercion, humiliation and torture become inevitable.

Remember: we are not talking about that rarest of cases, the 'ticking time
bomb' situation, which is sometimes used as a limiting case that justifies
torture of prisoners who have knowledge of an imminent attack. This is
general or nonspecific information-gathering, authorized by American
military and civilian administrators to learn more of a shadowy empire of
evildoers about whom Americans know virtually nothing, in countries
about which they are singularly ignorant: in principle, any information at
all might be useful. An interrogation that produced no information
(whatever information might consist of) would count as a failure.

Even more appalling, since the pictures were meant to be circulated and seen by many people: it was all fun. And this idea of fun is, alas, more and more -- contrary to what President Bush is telling the world -- part of 'the true nature and heart of America.' It is hard to measure the increasing acceptance of brutality in American life, but its evidence is everywhere, starting with the video games of killing that are a principal entertainment of boys -- can the video game 'Interrogating the Terrorists' really be far behind? -- and on to the violence that has become endemic in the group rites of youth on an exuberant kick. Violent crime is down, yet the easy delight taken in violence seems to have grown. From the harsh torments inflicted on incoming students in many American suburban high schools -- depicted in Richard Linklater's 1993 film, 'Dazed and Confused' -- to the hazing rituals of physical brutality and sexual humiliation in college fraternities and on sports teams, America has become a country in which the fantasies and the practice of violence are seen as good entertainment, fun.

What formerly was segregated as pornography, as the exercise of extreme sadomasochistic longings -- as in Pier Paolo Pasolini's last, near-unwatchable film, 'Salò' (1975), depicting orgies of torture in the Fascist redoubt in northern Italy at the end of the Mussolini era -- is now being normalized, by some, as high-spirited play or venting. To 'stack naked men' is like a college fraternity prank, said a caller to Rush Limbaugh and the many millions of Americans who listen to his radio show. Had the caller, one wonders, seen the photographs? No matter. The observation -- or is it the fantasy? -- was on the mark. What may still be capable of shocking some Americans was Limbaugh's response: 'Exactly!' he exclaimed. 'Exactly my point. This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation, and we're going to ruin people's lives over it, and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time.' 'They' are the American soldiers, the torturers. And Limbaugh went on: 'You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people. You ever heard of emotional release?'

Shock and awe were what our military promised the Iraqis. And shock and the awful are what these photographs announce to the world that the Americans have delivered: a pattern of criminal behavior in open contempt of international humanitarian conventions. Soldiers now pose, thumbs up, before the atrocities they commit, and send off the pictures to their buddies. Secrets of private life that, formerly, you would have given nearly anything to conceal, you now clamor to be invited on a television show to reveal. What is illustrated by these photographs is as much the culture of shamelessness as the reigning admiration for unapologetic brutality.

Russia is on the move again. After the collapse of the Soviet Empire it wants to start history once more, and how! Old myths about Russian greatness and the Russian soul are being dusted off. Borders are being redrawn, spheres of influence determined by force — it's as if we're back in the nineteenth century, complete with rigid and short-sighted tsarism. Russians have a sense that the Western world, including Western values and Western ways of thinking, are no longer paramount.

Welke grootmacht is hier 'on the move'? Wat Abu Ghraib en Guantanamo aantoonde was inderdaad 'the culture of shamelessness' en 'the reigning admiration for unapologetic brutality.'

Pardon? 'We'?

Of, zoals Wikipedia, meldt:

More than 1000 US Bases and/or Military Installations' beschikt.

US military presence expanded around the World has expanded dramatically in the course of the last five years.  This study is largely based on data for the period 2001-2005.

The Worldwide control of humanity’s economic, social and political activities is under the helm of US corporate and military power. Underlying this process are various schemes of direct and indirect military intervention. These US sponsored strategies ultimately consist in a process of global subordination.
Where is the Threat?

The 2000 Global Report published in 1980 had outlined 'the State of the World' by focusing on so-called  'level of threats' which might negatively influence or undermine US interests.

Twenty years later, US strategists, in an attempt to justify their military interventions in different parts of the World, have conceptualized the greatest fraud in US history, namely 'the Global War on Terrorism' (GWOT). The latter, using a fabricated pretext  constitutes a global war against all those who oppose US hegemony. A modern form of slavery, instrumented through militarization and the 'free market' has unfolded.

Major elements of the conquest and world domination strategy by the US refer to:

  1. the control of the world economy and its financial markets,

2) the taking over of all natural resources (primary resources and nonrenewable sources of energy). The latter constitute the cornerstone of US power through the activities of its multinational corporations.

Geopolitical Outreach: Network of Military Bases

The US has established its control over 191 governments which are members of the United Nations. The conquest, occupation and/or otherwise supervision of these various regions of the World is supported by an integrated network of military bases and installations which covers the entire Planet (Continents, Oceans and Outer Space). All this pertains to the workings of  an extensive Empire, the exact dimensions of which are not always easy to ascertain.

Known and documented from information in the public domaine including Annual Reports of the US Congress, we have a fairly good understanding of the structure of US military expenditure, the network of US military bases and  the shape of this US military-strategic configuration in different regions of the World.

The objective of this article is to build a summary profile of the World network of military bases, which are under the jurisdiction and/or control  of the US. The spatial distribution of these military bases will be examined together with an analysis of the multibillion dollar annual cost of their activities.

*Blowback. The Costs and Consequences of American Empire. Chalmers Johnson.

*Overthrow. America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq. Stephen Kinzer.

Devil's Game. How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam. Robert Dreyfuss.

*Imperial Overstretch. Roger Burbach & Jim Tarbell.

*Imperial Hubris. Why the West Is Losing The War on Terror. Michael Scheuer.

*Killing Hope. William Blum.

*Failed States. The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy. Noam Chomsky.

*Iran. A People Interrupted. Hamid Dabashi.

*Treacherous Alliance. The Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran, and the U.S. Trita Parsi.
