Henk Hofland en de Massa 78


Wanneer Hofland in De Groene Amsterdammer van 4 juni 2015 met grote stelligheid over de '1,3 miljoen laaggeletterden' in Nederland poneert dat 'hun bereidheid tot geweldpleging' almaar 'groeit,' dan verzwijgt hij zijn eigen enthousiasme voor grootscheepse 'geweldpleging' in NAVO-verband, die landen als Afghanistan, Irak en Libië in totale chaos hebben gestort. Wanneer hij in De Groene Amsterdammer van 15 april 2015 beweert dat 'Hillary' nu 'al de ideale kandidaat' is voor het Amerikaanse presidentschap, en daarbij verzwijgt dat dezelfde 'Hillary' als senator vóór de illegale inval in Irak stemde, dan demonstreert ook dit zijn verregaande steun aan en 'bereidheid tot geweldpleging.' En wanneer hij tenslotte in hetzelfde nummer verklaart dat 'het Westen' zich 'zal moeten aanpassen,' maar daar onmiddellijk aan toevoegt 'nog altijd bij voorkeur onder Amerikaanse leiding, als het een Democraat is,' in dit geval zijn 'Hillary,' dan toont 'de beste journalist van de twintigste eeuw' andermaal zijn 'bereidheid' tot massale 'geweldpleging.' Kortom, op het gebied van de 'geweldpleging' van NAVO-bondgenoot de VS manifesteert de hooggeletterde Hofland zich met de regelmaat van de klok als een 'hufter' van formaat, om even zijn jargon te lenen. Als overtuigd Atlanticus beleefde de nestor van de polderpers tijdens de Koude Oorlog zijn gouden jaren; de Sovjet-Unie was het levende Kwaad, terwijl voor hem Washington als een 'Shining City upon a Hill' was. Hofland gelooft in  het Amerikaanse exceptionalisme, in wat oud-filmster Ronald Reagan pathetisch betitelde als 

a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here.

De retoriek van deze mythe leeft nog steeds onder Nederlandse Atlantici als Henk Hofland en Geert Mak, die in zijn Reizen zonder John. Op zoek naar Amerika nog in 2012 er diep van overtuigd was dat de VS als 'ordebewaker en politieagent' functioneerde, en 'nog steeds' het 'anker' was 'van het hele Atlantische deel van de wereld in de ruimste zin van het woord. Het is nog altijd de 'standaardmacht,' een rol die Rusland en ook China niet snel zullen overnemen,' een oordeel dat Mak bijna letterlijk had overgenomen van de als 'conservative hack' bekend staande Duitse Atlanticus Josef Joffe, uitgever en redacteur van het weekblad Die Zeit, die in het september/oktober 2009 nummer van het reactionaire Foreign Affairs onder de kop 'The Default Power. The False Prophecy of America's Decline,' een artikel schreef, dat onmiddellijk door De Groene Amsterdammer in het Nederlands werd gepubliceerd. Joffe schreef:

De VS zijn de default power, de standaard-macht, het land dat het podium inneemt omdat er niemand anders is met de vereiste macht en motivatie. Waarom geen van de anderen? Speculerend kun je zeggen dat er een liberaal, zeevarend rijk nodig is om nationale belangen te veranderen in internationale publieke zaken. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk bouwde een wereldrijk voor zichzelf, maar ondertussen produceerde het een hele berg aan kostbare publieke zaken: vrije handel, vrijheid der zeeën en de gouden standaard.

Het is moeilijk China, India, Japan, Rusland of de EU voor te stellen als bewakers van het grotere algemeen belang. De EU komt in de buurt, maar heeft noch de middelen noch de wil om strategisch te handelen. Japan, hoewel rijk genoeg om de middelen vrij te maken, zal onder de strategische paraplu van de VS blijven kruipen zo lang als die is opgestoken. India heeft de omvang en de populatie, maar behalve dat het de armste van allemaal is, zit het gevangen in een permanent conflict met Pakistan (en een latent conflict met China), wat alle middelen en aandacht opeist. China en Rusland zijn revisionistische machten die alleen voor zichzelf opkomen. Die landen mogen dan voorbeelden van autoritaire modernisering lijken, maar om echt tot de politieke verbeelding te spreken op een hoger niveau moet een land niet alleen rijk zijn, maar ook democratisch en vrij.


Dat Amerikaanse intellectuelen fundamentele kritiek uitten op het democratische gehalte van wat zij zien als een plutocratisch systeem wordt door de Makkianen en Hoflanden genegeerd. Het feit dat bijvoorbeeld één op de vijf Amerikaanse kinderen ondervoed is en in bittere armoede leeft is voor hen kennelijk een doodgewone manifestatie van de 'Amerikaanse democratie.' Dat in die 'democratie' meer dan 40 miljoen burgers in armoede probeert te overleven, demonstreert voor hen eveneens hoe 'democratisch en vrij' het land is. Hoewel Hofland als Nederlandse opiniemaker 'onder Amerikaanse leiding, als het een Democraat is,' wil blijven, is illustrerend voor de houding van de 'politiek-literaire elite' in de polder.  Zij trekt zich niets aan van de werkelijkheid zoals die beschreven werd in Vanity Fair van mei 2011 door de Amerikaanse Nobelprijswinnaar Economie, professor Joseph Stiglitz:

It’s no use pretending that what has obviously happened has not in fact happened. The upper 1 percent of Americans are now taking in nearly a quarter of the nation’s income every year. In terms of wealth rather than income, the top 1 percent control 40 percent. Their lot in life has improved considerably. Twenty-five years ago, the corresponding figures were 12 percent and 33 percent. One response might be to celebrate the ingenuity and drive that brought good fortune to these people, and to contend that a rising tide lifts all boats. That response would be misguided. While the top 1 percent have seen their incomes rise 18 percent over the past decade, those in the middle have actually seen their incomes fall. For men with only high-school degrees, the decline has been precipitous—12 percent in the last quarter-century alone. All the growth in recent decades—and more—has gone to those at the top. In terms of income equality, America lags behind any country in the old, ossified Europe that President George W. Bush used to deride. Among our closest counterparts are Russia with its oligarchs and Iran. While many of the old centers of inequality in Latin America, such as Brazil, have been striving in recent years, rather successfully, to improve the plight of the poor and reduce gaps in income, America has allowed inequality to grow.

Desondanks laat Geert Mak zijn publiek verheugd weten dat de 'Amerikaanse soft power' nog 'altijd sterk aanwezig' is, om vervolgens uiteen te zetten dat '[s]oft power, in de kern, de overtuigingskracht van een staat, de kracht [is] om het debat naar zich toe te trekken, om de agenda van de wereldpolitiek te bepalen,' waarbij de nationale historicus die geen historicus is maar journalist datgene verzwijgt wat een geïnformeerde Amerikaanse burger niet verzwijgt, namelijk dat in 2011 het Amerikaanse 

military budget a whopping 58 percent [is]! It also costs the taxpayers approximately $1 million dollars to support one soldier per year. The Pentagon alone has consumed over $8 trillion since 1996 with no account for the money it has spent! Our ventures in Afghanistan include guarding opium poppy crops and droning people at will. This is part of our government's rhetoric that America is being kept safe and we are protecting our interests in the Middle East.


Desondanks is er volgens Henk Hofland sprake van 'het vredestichtende Westen,' en blijft voor 'onze' Nederlandse propagandisten de retoriek gelden van bijvoorbeeld president Bill Clinton, die in 1996 verklaarde dat 'America remains the indispensable nation en dat 'there are times when America, and only America, can make a difference between war and peace, between freedom and repression.' Hoewel de opiniemaker van De Groene weliswaar het tegenovergestelde suggereert, is er ten aanzien van het buitenlands beleid van Washington en Wall Street geen wezenlijk verschil tussen Democraten en Republikeinen. In 2004 merkte George W. Bush op dat

Like generations before us, we have a calling from beyond the stars to stand for freedom. This is the everlasting dream of America...

In een toespraak op 2 juni 2006 voor de University of Massachusetts zei Barack Obama op zijn beurt:

It's your turn to keep this daringly radical but unfailingly simple notion of America alive - that no matter where you're born or how much your parents have; no matter what you look like or what you believe in, you can still rise to become whatever you want; still go on to achieve great things; still pursue the happiness you hope for.

Mochten de rijken en de zionistische lobby haar financieel blijven steunen, dan zal straks Hillary Clinton als president een boodschap van gelijke strekking uitspreken. Maar hoe hard en hoe vaak deze propaganda ook wordt herhaald, achter de barokke façade heersen diepe twijfel en angst. Vier maanden na de aanslagen van 11 september 2001 zag ik tijdens een reis door New Jersey en Pennsylvania aan het wijdverspreide vlagvertoon tot in het kleinste gehucht, hoe diep de angst zich in het bewustzijn van de doorsnee blanke burger had genesteld. De vlaggen waren geen teken van kracht, maar van zwakte, van een gebrek aan identiteit. Voor het eerst in haar geschiedenis beschouwde de Amerikaanse bevolking zich geen winnaar meer, maar een zo intens gevreesde 'loser.' Alle onderhuidse angst en onzekerheid barstte los, en geen enkele revanche, hoe gewelddadig ook, zou het gevoel slachtoffer te zijn geweest ooit kunnen wegnemen. De 20ste eeuw mocht dan wel worden beschouwd als 'The American Century,' in werkelijkheid was die eeuw tevens het tijdperk van niet alleen de verwoestende 'Great Depression' maar ook die van de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog. In zijn studie Projecting The End of the American Dream. Hollywood's Visions of U.S. Decline (2013) beschrijft de Amerikaanse hoogleraar Gordon B. Arnold op een indringende manier hoe de 'anxiety' het leven van de massa zelfs na de Tweede Wereldoorlog in zijn greep bleef houden. Hij doet dit aan de hand van speelfilms die een indringend beeld geven van de Amerikaanse samenleving. Over de periode vlak na 1945 schreef professor Arnold:

With its triumph, the United States had achieved a lofty position of power and recognition. The people of the United States savored (genoten. svh) peace and victory. They were eager to put the trials and tribulations of war behind them. Looking forward, they were ready for a bright, new future and a return to normalcy as they imagined it.

In reality, however, it had been a very long time since things had been 'normal.' By the time the United States had entered the war, life had already been altered by the years of economic hardship. The war was a crisis of monumental proportions, but in the decade prior to the war, the years of the Great Depression had devastated the nation. The economic catastrophe stretched the fabric of American society thin and ruptured national confidence in the 1930s.

Dit feit is volslagen onbekend bij de Nederlandse opiniemakers en de rest van de 'politiek-literaire elite' in de polder. Zo verklaarde in 2012 tegenover Vrij Nederland de 'Amerika-deskundige' Geert Mak na de verschijning van zijn boek Reizen zonder John dat 

Amerika in de loop van deze eeuw weer het ‘gewone’ land zal moeten worden dat het tot 1940 was.

De VS is evenwel nooit een 'gewoon' land geweest, waar het leven 'normaal' was. Integendeel zelfs. Vanaf het allereerste begin streefde de Amerikaanse elite naar een zo groot mogelijk imperium, in de rotsvaste overtuiging dat aldus was voorbeschikt door haar blanke, protestants-christelijke God, die 'het beloofde land' in de 'Nieuwe Wereld' aan de genocidale blanke Europese kolonisten had geschonken. In The Chosen Peoples. America, Israel and the Ordeals of Divine Election (2010) stellen de auteurs Todd Gitlin en Liel Leibovitz:

Many of those who expounded on such themes during the Revolutionary War envisioned continental expansion as the proof of America’s divinity… increasingly, many argued that faith in Providence would be rewarded in a worldly, indeed territorial fashion. Such was the case with Ezra Stiles, the president of Yale and a leading exponent of the Christian-republican synthesis. Stiles, convinced that ‘true religion’ was necessary to perfect ‘our system of dominion and civil polity,’ greeted what he called ‘God’s American Israel,’ with Washington cast as ‘the American Joshua,’ in a sermon on May 8, 1783, titled ‘The United States Elevated to Glory and Honor.’ Stiles’s text was Deuteronomy 26:19, Moses’s declaration that the Lord would elevate his ‘holy people’ ‘high above all nations.’ In Stiles’s vision, America’s ascendency in world trade would fulfill biblical prophecy.

Het is hierbij van belang te weten dat Deuteronomium, het vijfde boek van het Oude Testament, de ‘judeo-christelijke God’ genocide rechtvaardigt door de Joodse veroveraars van het ‘beloofde land’ opdracht te geven: van de steden dezer volken, die u de HEERE, uw God, ten erve geeft, zult gij niets laten leven, dat adem heeft.’  De ‘uitverkorenen,’  zo zegt het woord zelf al, zijn ‘uitverkoren’ door een hogere macht, en staan dus boven elke juridische en morele wet. Universele normen en waarden gelden niet ten opzichte van degenen die niet zijn ‘uitverkoren’ door de 'God der Wrake.' De 'Almachtige' wordt nog immer aangeroepen zodra de natie weer eens in oorlog verkeert: ‘God Bless America.’ Tijdens zijn laatste toespraak als opperbevelhebber liet George Washington in 1783 zijn gehoor weten dat hij hoogstpersoonlijk, the Divine Arm’ had gezien ‘visibly outstretched for our deliverance.’ Zichzelf zag hij slechts in de rol van ‘humble instrumentality in carrying the designs of Providence into effect.’ Vijf jaar later noemde de geestelijke en latere president van Yale University, Timothy Dwight, zijn landgenoten ‘this chosen race’ die ‘all the improvements of all lands’ konden claimen zo ‘Far o’er the Atlantic wild its beams aspire/The world approves it, and the heavens admire…’ Voor niets of niemand zou dit Amerikaans imperium wijken, zo was gelijk vanaf het begin duidelijk. Over Thomas Jefferson, de rijke slaveneigenaar die bij een slavin kinderen had verwekt, en die in de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring had geproclameerd dat ‘all men are created equal,’ schreven de auteurs van The Chosen Peoples:

Thomas Jefferson, who, unfazed by contradiction, entertained at various times an intense theory of chosenness; a profound suspicion of government; a willingness to exercise arbitrary power; and a vivid ambition for what would later be called America’s Manifest Destiny,

dat de blanke het recht gaf op andermans land en zelfs diens leven.

In his First Inaugural, in 1801, Jefferson made explicit what had earlier been implicit: he grafted the concept of chosenness specifically onto physical territory. Americans, he said, ‘possess[ed] a chosen country, with room enough for our descendants to the thousandth and thousandth generation.’ In his religiously unorthodox manner, he assured Americans that he and they were ‘enlightened by a benign religion, professed, indeed, and practiced in various forms,’ all of which ‘acknowledg[ed] and ador[ed] an overruling Providence.’

Hoe het protestantse geloof in een almachtige luchtgod kon samengaan met ‘Verlichtingsidealen’ is vrij simpel verklaarbaar: ‘Jefferson himself was deeply involved in Virginia land speculation.’

It might… have surprised literal-minded citizens when, a mere two years later, Jefferson as president seized the opportunity to double the territory of the United States of America with one grand move – the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 (waarbij de VS meer dan 2 miljoen vierkante kilometer land van Frankrijk kocht. svh). Hadn’t he just pronounced the United States ‘room[y] enough’? Why moreover, was he ready to resort to arms if peaceful negotiations failed to procure New Orleans and guaranteed access to the Mississippi River?

Het spreekt voor zich dat de Indiaanse stammen die het land al millennia-lang bewoonden, niets gevraagd werd. Die werden in de loop der tijd afgeslacht en de weinige overlevenden in reservaten opgesloten, geheel volgens de Verlichtingsleer, tenminste, als 'we' afgaan op Geert Mak's woorden tegenover Vrij Nederland dat

 Amerika de Verlichting heeft uitgevoerd, als real life experiment.


Opnieuw Gitlin en Leibovitz over de 'Louisiana Aankoop':

If the original colonies had been a ‘chosen country,’ the Purchase would more than double their divinely sanctioned potential.

waardoor het mogelijk werd dat ‘the Christian-republican synthesis marched on.’ Jefferson, de Verlichtingsfilosoof voor wie gold dat 'all men are created equal,' en 'that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,' had geen enkel probleem met de genocide op de Indianenvolkeren. Eenmaal president van 'the promised land' over de oorspronkelijke bewoners dat de VS wel gedwongen was ‘to pursue them to extermination, or drive them to new seats beyond our reach.’

Gitlin en Leibovitz:

By such a rash expedient Jefferson hoped to slash through the Gordian knot that had bound Americans to the recalcitrant for two centuries.

Even een terzijde. Het begrip ‘recalcitrant’ is op deze plaats opmerkelijk omdat het wordt gebruikt door twee joodse auteurs, van wie Gitlin uit de extreem linkse hoek komt. ‘Recalcitrant,’ oftewel weerspannig  ongehoorzaam, onwillig. Het feit dat Indianen zich niet wilden laten verdrijven van hun land, terug vochten toen ze uitgeroeid werden, is dus een teken van 'ongehoorzaamheid, weerspannigheid.' Dat Gitlin en Leibovitz dit begrip nooit zullen toepassen op de genocide van joodse Europeanen is terecht, maar tegelijkertijd opmerkelijk. Van dezelfde radicale onverschilligheid, ik heb er geen ander woord voor, getuigt Geert Mak’s opmerking dat ‘Amerika’ de ‘Verlichting’ heeft ‘uitgevoerd, als real life experiment.’ Mak's houding is kenmerkend voor de blanke, joods-christelijke cultuur ten opzichte van de ‘recalcitrante’ Ander. Dat de mainstream onder de westerse intelligentsia die zich Verlicht acht besmet is met deze mentaliteit bewijst hoe intellectueel gecorrumpeerd ze is geraakt. Daarover schreef de joods-Hongaarse auteur, Holocaust-overlevende en Nobelprijswinnaar Literatuur, Imre Kertész in De verbannen taal (2004):

het ressentiment, die troebele drab van driften die onder de woorden borrelt, is echt. Het wordt enerzijds gevoed door angst en bestaansonzekerheid: veel intellectuelen, die hier jaren- en decennialang op hun eigen manier om de vrijheid hebben gevochten (of om datgene wat ze voor vrijheid aanzagen), merkten plotseling dat de grond onder hun voeten werd weggetrokken. In werkelijkheid stortte slechts het waardensysteem in waarin zij een vaste plek hadden. De snelheid waarmee dat gebeurde leek op een vrij val en dat schokte hen. Tegen de tijd dat ze bijkwamen van de dreun van die val en uit de stofwolken van de puinhopen te voorschijn kwamen, sprak de wereld om hen heen inmiddels de taal van beurzen, banken en mafia's.

Het toppunt van ironie is dat De Groene Amsterdammer over De verbannen taal oordeelde 'Wie Imre Kertész leest kán niet meer vergeten,' om vervolgens Kertész scherpzinnige beschrijvingen volledig te 'vergeten.' Daarom,verder met Gitlin en Leibovitz over Jefferson:

In truth, he was following the main line that the colonists had pursued from the seventeenth century on as, like it or not, they confronted the stark fact that their Promised Land was already occupied by peoples whose providential significance was unclear… If Jefferson, in a contemplative mood, saw tragedy in the irresistible flow of civilization – in the same letter… in which he took either ‘extermination’ or expulsion to be an American ‘obligation,’ […] he was willing to reconcile himself to his role in this destiny, just as, by the relentless logic of history, the Indians would have to reconcile themselves to their own… He told his countrymen that the republic he was shaping in word and deed was a surge forward not merely in the political evolution of nations but in the destiny of a uniquely, divinely sanctioned chosen people. 

Ondertussen blijft de blanke provinciaal Geert Mak, die volgens eigen zeggen een gelovig christen is, zijn bewondering uitspreken over de 'uitverkorenen' die, volgens hem, de 'Verlichting' als 'real life experiment' hebben uitgevoerd. Op pagina 155 van zijn boek Reizen zonder John (2012), waarin hij claimt 'Op zoek naar Amerika' te zijn, laat hij zijn mainstream-publiek weten dat

Thomas Jefferson nog maar drieëndertig jaar oud [was] toen hij in 1776 de Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring optekende, een van de mooiste staatsdocumenten die ooit zijn geschreven… Zijn uitgangspunt was een staat waarin de burgers niet alleen rechten hadden om zich tegen machthebbers te verdedigen… maar waarin alle soevereiniteit bij het volk werd gelegd.

Het 'volk' was destijds beperkt tot christelijke, blanke mannen die bezittingen beschikten. Amerikaanse vrouwen, zwarte slaven, indianen en arme blanken hadden geen ‘rechten… om zich tegen machthebbers te verdedigen.’ Die behoorden niet tot de soevereine 'uitverkorenen.' Over de rijke slaveneigenaar Jefferson verzwijgt Mak het volgende:

In his second term as president, when he was less reluctant to irritate his political enemies and more concerned about America’s place in the long arc of history, he brought this sense of American chosenness out of the closet. Om March 4, 1805, he sounded every bit like a Puritan Father when he inserted the language of divine election into his second inaugural address, asking ‘the favor of that Being in whose hands we are, who led our fathers, as Israel of old, from their native land and planted them in a country flowing with all the necessaries and comforts of life; who has covered our infancy with His providence and our riper years with His wisdom and power.’ Providence had ushered in not only wisdom and power but land that stretched far beyond the Mississippi. Jefferson found ‘Israel of old’ a usable past for an expanding nation...

Jefferson's ideologie illustreert een wezenlijk probleem, namelijk het feit dat Verlichtingsidealen als ‘all men are created equal’ geen rechtvaardiging verschaffen voor het uitmoorden of onderdrukken van andere volkeren en het stelen van hun land. Het gevolg was dat Jefferson, die zelf alles behalve een overtuigde gelovige was, genoodzaakt was de christelijke godsdienst erbij te slepen. En dus moest de man die eerder had verklaard dat ‘there would never have been an infidel, if there had never been a priest,’ net als een geestelijke beroep doen op de irrationele christelijke God, met een hoofdletter. Een ander probleem is dat iemand die zich uitverkoren voelt en superieur denkt te zijn vergeleken met alle niet-christenen, op den duur gehaat wordt. Hetzelfde geldt voor volkeren die zich beter achten aan de rest van de mensheid. Die haat krijgt onvermijdelijk een politieke vorm, van ‘Yankee go Home’ tot de aanslagen van 11 september 2001. Zodra het messianisme concrete vormen aanneemt, ontstaat er logischerwijze verzet hiertegen dat uitmondt in geweld van zowel de onderdrukte als de onderdrukker. Net als zijn opvolgers nam president Jefferson dit voor lief. De Amerikaanse elite ging en gaat nog steeds er blind van uit werkelijk uniek te zijn in de geschiedenis der mensheid en daarmee gelegitimeerd te zijn andere volkeren te forceren datgene te doen wat de Amerikaanse economische en politieke elite van hen eiste:

The station which we occupy among the nations of the earth is honorable, but awful. Trusted with the destinies of this solitary republic of the world, the only monument of human rights, and the sole depository of the sacred fire of freedom and self-government, from hence it is to be lighted up in other regions of the earth, if other regions of the earth shall ever become susceptible of its benign influence,

aldus de ware Jefferson, die in hagiografieën zo vaak geportretteerd wordt als een rationalist en door Mak gedachteloos ‘een man van de Verlichting’ wordt genoemd. Opnieuw The Chosen Peoples:

It may disconcert the prevailing image of Jefferson the empiricist to observe that he also devoted his life to a religious project. But he was, after all, an astute student of the Exodus – recall his proposal for a Great Seal with ‘a representation of the children of Israel in the wilderness, led by a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.’ President Jefferson learned the same lesson as Moses: a Promised Land would also require governance, even raw power. Fleeing Egypt, Moses, too, dreamed of a people unbound by governors and clerics, ‘a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ […]

Like Moses, Jefferson erected a steely edifice of government while decrying its necessity. In 1808, this fierce opponent of a standing army dispatched that very army to strong-arm the populace of northeastern ports into submitting to his ill-advised embargo on trading with England. As smugglers defied the law, he went so far as to argue that citizens might be held guilty until proven innocent. Like Moses, Jefferson came to tolerate no divergence from the righteous path, whatever burdens had to be shouldered as God’s chosen ones journeyed toward a perfect, exemplary union. Like Moses, Jefferson died without reaching the Promised Land.

Amerika is veranderd en hetzelfde geldt voor de wereld. Dat zullen de Amerikanen moeten beseffen, net als de bondgenoten. Niet de rest van de wereld maar het Westen zal zich moeten aanpassen,

de mainstream-opiniemaker blijft evenwel vasthouden aan de westerse superioriteitsgedachte door te stellen dat politieke veranderingen 'nog altijd bij voorkeur onder Amerikaanse leiding,' moet geschieden, 'als het een Democraat is.' De hoogbejaarde Koude Oorlogsprofeet is niet in staat zich een wereld voor te stellen waarin de blanke, christelijke, expansionistische, neoliberale ideologie definitief haar alleenheerschappij heeft verloren. Dit is slechts één aspect van het fundamentele probleem waarmee het rijke, volgens Hofland, 'vredestichtende Westen' wordt geconfronteerd. Daarnaast worden 'we' geconfronteerd met de uitputting van de grondstoffen en de steeds ingrijpendere consequenties van de op gang gebrachte klimaatverandering. En gekoppeld daaraan: aangezien er geen 'promised land' meer is, waar moeten de blanke overtolligen naar toe, en waar kan de blanke  elite haar grondstoffen nog roven en haar markten veroveren? Cold War II to McCarthyism II


Exclusive: With Cold War II in full swing, the New York Times is dusting off what might be called McCarthyism II, the suggestion that anyone who doesn’t get in line with U.S. propaganda must be working for Moscow, reports Robert Parry. 

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the U.S. government’s plunge into Cold War II would bring back the one-sided propaganda themes that dominated Cold War I, but it’s still unsettling to see how quickly the major U.S. news media has returned to the old ways, especially the New York Times, which has emerged as Official Washington’s propaganda vehicle of choice.
What has been most striking in the behavior of the Times and most other U.S. mainstream media outlets is their utter lack of self-awareness, for instance, accusing Russia of engaging in propaganda and alliance-building that are a pale shadow of what the U.S. government routinely does. Yet, the Times and the rest of the MSM act as if these actions are unique to Moscow.

A case in point is Monday’s front-page story in the Times entitled “Russia Wields Aid and Ideology Against West to Fight Sanctions,” which warns: “Moscow has brought to bear different kinds of weapons, according to American and European officials: money, ideology and disinformation.”
The article by Peter Baker and Steven Erlanger portrays the U.S. government as largely defenseless in the face of this unprincipled Russian onslaught: “Even as the Obama administration and its European allies try to counter Russia’s military intervention across its border, they have found themselves struggling at home against what they see as a concerted drive by Moscow to leverage its economic power, finance European political parties and movements, and spread alternative accounts of the conflict.”
Like many of the Times’ recent articles, this one relies on one-sided accusations from U.S. and European officials and is short on both hard evidence of actual Russian payments – and a response from the Russian government to the charges. At the end of the long story, the writers do include one comment from Brookings Institution scholar, Fiona Hill, a former U.S. national intelligence officer on Russia, noting the shortage of proof.
“The question is how much hard evidence does anyone have?” she asked. But that’s about all a Times’ reader will get if he or she is looking for some balanced reporting.
Missing the Obvious
Still, the more remarkable aspect of the article is how it ignores the much more substantial evidence of the U.S. government and its allies themselves financing propaganda operations and supporting “non-governmental organizations” that promote the favored U.S. policies in countries around the world.
Plus, there’s the failure to recognize that many of Official Washington’s own accounts of global problems have been riddled with propaganda and outright disinformation.
For instance, much of the State Department’s account of the Aug. 21, 2013 sarin attack in Syria turned out to be false or misleading. United Nations inspectors discovered only one rocket carrying sarin – not the barrage that U.S. officials had originally alleged – and the rocket had a much shorter range than the U.S. government (and the New York Times) claimed. Then, after the Feb. 22, 2014 U.S.-backed coup in Ukraine, the U.S. government and the Times became veritable founts of propaganda and disinformation. Beyond refusing to acknowledge the key role played by neo-Nazi and other right-wing militias in the coup and subsequent violence, the State Department disseminated information to the Times that later was acknowledged to be false.
In April 2014, the Times published a lead story based on photographs of purported Russian soldiers in Ukraine but had to retract it two days later because it turned out that the State Department had misrepresented where a key photo was  taken, destroying the premise of the article. And sometimes the propaganda came directly from senior U.S. government officials. For instance, on April 29, 2014, Richard Stengel, under secretary of state for public diplomacy, issued a “Dipnote” that leveled accusations that the Russian network RT was painting “a dangerous and false picture of Ukraine’s legitimate government,” i.e., the post-coup regime that took power after elected President Viktor Yanukovych was driven from office. In this context, Stengel denounced RT as “a distortion machine, not a news organization.”
Though he offered no specific dates and times for the offending RT programs, Stengel did complain about “the unquestioning repetition of the ludicrous assertion … that the United States has invested $5 billion in regime change in Ukraine. These are not facts, and they are not opinions. They are false claims, and when propaganda poses as news it creates real dangers and gives a green light to violence.”
However, RT’s “ludicrous assertion” about the U.S. investing $5 billion was a clear reference to a public speech by Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland to U.S. and Ukrainian business leaders on Dec. 13, 2013, in which she told them that “we have invested more than $5 billion” in what was needed for Ukraine to achieve its “European aspirations.” [See Consortiumnews.com’s “Who’s the Propagandist: US or RT?”]
One could go on and on about the U.S. government making false or misleading claims about these and other international crises. But it should be clear that Official Washington doesn’t have clean hands when it comes to propaganda mud-slinging, though you wouldn’t know that from the Times’ article on Monday.
Funding Cut-outs 
And, beyond the U.S. government’s direct dissemination of disinformation, the U.S. government also has spread around hundreds of millions of dollars to finance “journalism” organizations, political activists and “non-governmental organizations” that promote U.S. policy goals inside targeted countries. Before the Feb. 22, 2014 coup in Ukraine, there were scores of such operations in the country financed by the National Endowment for Democracy. NED’s budget from Congress exceeds $100 million a year.
But NED, which has been run by neocon Carl Gershman since its founding in 1983, is only part of the picture. You have many other propaganda fronts operating under the umbrella of the U.S. State Department and its U.S. Agency for International Development. Last May 1, USAID issued a fact sheetsummarizing its work financing friendly journalists around the world, including “journalism education, media business development, capacity building for supportive institutions, and strengthening legal-regulatory environments for free media.”
USAID estimated its budget for “media strengthening programs in over 30 countries” at $40 million annually, including aiding “independent media organizations and bloggers in over a dozen countries,” In Ukraine before the coup, USAID offered training in “mobile phone and website security.”
USAID, working with billionaire George Soros’s Open Society, also funds the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, which engages in “investigative journalism” that usually goes after governments that have fallen into disfavor with the United States and then are singled out for accusations of corruption. The USAID-funded OCCRP also collaborates with Bellingcat, an online investigative website founded by blogger Eliot Higgins.
Higgins has spread misinformation on the Internet, including discredited claims implicating the Syrian government in the sarin attack in 2013 and directing an Australian TV news crew to what appeared to be the wrong location for a video of a BUK anti-aircraft battery as it supposedly made its getaway to Russia after the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014.
Despite his dubious record of accuracy, Higgins has gained mainstream acclaim, in part, because his “findings” always match up with the propaganda theme that the U.S. government and its Western allies are peddling. Though most genuinely independent bloggers are ignored by the mainstream media, Higgins has found his work touted.
In other words, whatever Russia is doing to promote its side of the story in Europe and elsewhere is more than matched by the U.S. government through its direct and indirect agents of influence. Indeed, during the original Cold War, the CIA and the old U.S. Information Agency refined the art of “information warfare,” including pioneering some of its current features like having ostensibly “independent” entities and cut-outs present the propaganda to a cynical public that rejects much of what it hears from government but may trust “citizen journalists” and “bloggers.”
To top off this modern propaganda structure, we now have the paper-of-record New York Times coming along to suggest that anyone who isn’t disseminating U.S. propaganda must be in Moscow’s pocket. The implication is that now that we have Cold War II, we can expect to have McCarthyism II as well.

Interviewed on June 6th by German Economic News, the chief economist at Bremer Landesbank, Folker Hellmeyer, says that because of Obama’s sanctions against Russia, German exports declined year-over-year by 18% in 2014, and by 34% in the first two months of 2015 (no later figures), but he asserts that “The damage is much more comprehensive than these statistics show,” because those are only the “primary losses,” and there are in addition “secondary effects,” which get even worse over time. 
For example: “European countries with strong business in Russia, including Finland and Austria, are economically hit very hard. These countries consequently place fewer orders from Germany. Moreover, considering that European corporations will circumvent the sanctions, to create production facilities at the highest efficiency level in Russia, we lose this potential capital stock, which is the basis of our prosperity. Russia wins the capital stock,” at the EU’s expense, even though the sanctions are targeted against Russia.
But the nub is this:
For the future, Germany and the EU place their economic reliability into question with Russia. The relationship of trust is broken by Germany and the EU. In order to build such confidence, it takes several years. Between signature and delivery are up to five years. … Siemens is now thrown out from a major project for this reason [i.e., because the requisite predictability has been lost]. Alstom has likewise lost the contract for the railway line from Moscow to Beijing. Consequently, the potential for damage is much more massive than the current figures show, not only for Germany, but for the entire EU.
Then, he says:
More [projects] still in planning include the axis from Peking to Moscow as part of the Shanghai Corporation and the BRIC countries, the largest growth project in modern history, the construction of the infrastructure of Eurasia, from Moscow to Vladivostok, to Southern China and India. How far the EU and Germany’s sanctions-policy regarding Russia figures in these developing-countries’ mega-projects will depend upon whether we’ll be seen as hostile in other emerging countries than Russia. [Note from Eric Zuesse: Obama speaking 28 May 2014 to graduating West Point cadets‘Russia’s aggression toward former Soviet states unnerves capitals in Europe, while China’s economic rise and military reach worries its neighbors. From Brazil to India, rising middle classes compete with us, and governments seek a greater say in global forums.’ His attitude toward developing countries is clear — they are enemies, to be dealt with via the military, not economic partners to advance with us in economic cooperation.] But, obviously, there is a lack that some participants in European politics [and inside the White House!] have in their abilities to think abstractly on our behalf.
Asked who will be paying the price for this, he says:
“The measurable damage is loss of growth, in lost wages, losses in contributions to the social system and in tax revenue. This is true for the past 12 months, and it is valid for the years ahead. The people in Germany and the EU will pay the price through lost prosperity and stability. The unmeasurable damage lies in an elevated geopolitical risk situation for the people in the EU.”
Asked about the situation in Ukraine, Hellmeyer says:
“It is indeed irritating. People who are focused not only on Western ‘quality media’ are amazed at those media hiding the aggression of Kiev and the discriminatory laws implemented by the Government in Kiev, which constitute a serious challenge to the claim that Western values and democracy are being supported by the West. I believe, to Mr Steinmeier’s credit, that he is in fact talking plainly about these matters behind closed doors. The question is whether the behavior of the Atlantic alliance supports Mr. Steinmeier. I refer in this regard especially to Victoria Nuland. The fact is that by the coup in the Ukraine, an oligarchy friendly towards Moscow was replaced by an oligarchy now oriented toward the United States. It’s geopolitics, which benefits third forces, but definitely not Germany, not the EU, not Russia, and not Ukraine.”
So, he sees U.S. as having gained at the expense of every other country, but especially at Europe’s expense.
Asked about the future, Folker Hellmeyer says:
For me, the conflict has already been decided. The axis Moscow-Beijing-BRIC wins. The dominance of the West is through. In 1990 those countries accounted for only about 25% of world economic output. Today, they represent 56% of world economic output, and 85% of world population. They control about 70% of the world’s foreign exchange reserves. They grow annually by an average of 4% – 5%. Since the United States were not prepared to share power internationally (e.g., by changing the voting-apportionments in the IMF and World Bank), the future rests with those countries themselves, to build in the emerging markets sector on their own financial system. There lies their future. The EU is currently being drawn into the conflict, which the United States caused because she did not share power and want to share. The longer we pursue this [mono-polar, hegemonic, Imperial, supremacist, internationally dictatorial, aggressive] policy in the EU, the higher the price [to Europe will be].
He goes on to say:
The fact is that the emerging countries emancipate themselves from US control. This is evident in the creation of competitive institutions of the World Bank (AIIB) and the IMF (New Development Bank) by the axis of the emerging countries. This displeases the still prevailing hegemon. The current international hot spots of Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, to the Ukraine, are an expression of this, in the background, as a clearly identifiable power-confrontation [between the U.S. and every other country]. If we were there intending to establish democracy and freedom, let’s look at the success in achieving those goals. [His implication: it’s failure.]
German Economic News asks: “The contempt with which the US government deals with the Europeans is remarkable, such as the NSA tapping the Chancellor’s phone, and Nuland’s famous ‘Fuck the EU’ statement. Have European politicians no self-respect, or are they just too cowardly?”
Hellmeyer responds:
“The person who is a true democrat takes seriously his duties as a politician for the public’s well-being, and does not allow his nation’s self-determination to be so contemptuously trampled underfoot, such as has followed from that remark. The person who is not a true democrat, has with respect to the above values and canon, severe deficits.”
Concluding Remarks
Why is there not, in Europe, a huge movement to abandon NATO, and to kick out the U.S. military?
Whom is the U.S. ‘defending’ Europeans from, after the Warsaw Pact ended in 1991?
Why did not Gorbachev demand that NATO disband when the Warsaw Pact did — simultaneous (instead of one-sided) disbanding of the Cold War, so that there would not become the foundation for international fascism to arise to conquer Russia (first, to surround it by an expanding NATO — and ultimately via TPP & TTIP), in the aftermath?
Why is there not considerable public debate about these crucial historical, cultural, and economic, matters?
Why is there such deceit, which requires these massive questions to be ignored so long by ‘historians’? How is it even possible for the world to move constructively forward, in this environment, of severe censorship, in the media, in academia, and throughout ‘the free world’?
Why is there no outrage that the Saudi and other Arabic royals fund islamic jihad (so long as it’s not in their own countries) but America instead demonizes Russia’s leaders, who consistently oppose jihadists and jihadism?
Why are America’s rulers allied with the top financiers of jihad? Why is that being kept so secret? Why are these injustices tolerated by the public?
Who will change this, and how? When will that desperately needed change even start? Will it start soon enough? Maybe WW III won’t occur, but the damages are already horrible, and they’re getting worse.
This can go on until the end; and, if it does, that end will make horrible look like heaven, by comparison. It would be worse than anything ever known — and it could happen in and to our generation.
