De Mainstream Pers 240

One of the peculiarities of the white race's presence in America is how little intention has bend applied to it. As a people, wherever we have been, we have never really intended to be. The continent is said to have been discovered by an Italian who was on his way to India. The earliest explorers were looking for gold, which was, after an early streak of luck in Mexico, always somewhere farther on. Conquests and foundlings were incidental to this search — which did not, and could not, end until the continent was finally laid open in an orgy of gold seeking in the middle of the last century. Once the unknown of geography was mapped, the industrial marketplace became the new frontier, and we continued, with largely the same motives and with increasing haste and anxiety, to displace ourselves — no longer with unity of direction, like a migrant flock, but like the refugees from a broken anthill. In our time we have invaded foreign lands and the moon with the high-toned patriotism of the conquistadors, and with the same mixture of fantasy and avarice.
Wendell Berry. The Unsettling of America. 1977

One thing Barack Obama and Mitt Romney seem to have in common these days is an appreciation for the neoconservative historian Robert Kagan… according to news reports, President Obama has read and been influenced by a recent Kagan essay in The New Republic, which addresses 'the myth of American decline' and underscores the importance of the United States’ maintaining its 'global responsibilities.'

Mr. Kagan’s sometimes shaky reasoning is combined with a failure to grapple convincingly with crucial problems facing America today, the very problems that observers who worry about American decline have cited as clear and present dangers, including political gridlock at home, falling education scores, lowered social mobility and most important, a ballooning deficit.

Zijn 2003 verschenen boek Of Paradise And Power. America And Europe In The New World Order, begint Robert Kagan met het volgende 'cultuurconflict' tussen Europa en de VS:

On the all-important question of power – the efficacy of power, the morality of power, the desirability of power – American and European perspectives are diverging. Europe is turning away from power, or to put it a little differently, it is moving beyond power into a self-contained world of laws and rules and transnational negotiation and cooperation. It is entering a post-historical paradise of peace and relative prosperity, the realization of Immanuel Kant’s ‘perpetual peace.’ Meanwhile, the United States remains mired in history, exercising power in an anarchic Hobbesian world where international laws and rules are unreliable, and where true security and the defense and promotion of a liberal order still depend on the possession and use of military might. That is why on major strategic and international questions today, Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus: They agree on little and understand one another less and less. And this state of affairs is not transitory — the product of one American election or one catastrophic event. The reasons for the transatlantic divide are deep, long in development, and likely to endure. When it comes to setting national priorities, determining threats, defining challenges, and fashioning and implementing foreign and defense policies, the United States and Europe have parted ways,

De verklaring voor haar uitspraak 'Rot op met de Europese Unie' is simpel: 'Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus… the United States and Europe have parted ways.'

Generation after generation, those who intended to remain and prosper where they were have been dispossessed and driven out, or subverted and exploited where they were, by those who were carrying out some version of the search for El Dorado. Time after time, inlace after place, these conquerors have fragmented and demolished traditional communities, the beginnings of domestic cultures. They have always said that what they destroyed was outdated, provincial, and contemptible. And with alarming frequency they have been believed and trusted by their victims, especially when their victims were other white people.

If there is any law that has been consistently operative in American history, it is that the members of any established people or group or community sooner or later become 'redskins' — that is, they become the designated victims of an utterly ruthless, officially sanctioned and subsidized exploitation. The colonists who drove off the Indians came to be intolerably exploited by their imperial governments. And that alien imperialism was thrown off only to be succeed by a domestic version of the same thing; the class of independent small farmers who fought the war of independence has been exploited by, and recruited into, the industrial society until by now it is almost extinct.

Wendell Berry (born August 5, 1934) is an American novelist, poet, environmental activist, cultural critic, and farmer. A prolific author, he has written dozens of novels, short stories, poems, and essays. He is an elected member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, a recipient of The National Humanities Medal, and the Jefferson Lecturer for 2012. He is also a 2013 Fellow of The American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Berry has been named the recipient of the 2013 Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award.

As so often before, these are designated victims — people without official sanction, often without official friends, who are struggling to preserve their places, their values, and their lives as they know them and prefer to live them against the agencies of their own government, which are using their own tax money against them.

The only escape from this destiny of victimization has been to 'succeed' — that is, to 'make it' into the class of exploiters, and then to remain so specialized and so 'mobile' as to be unconscious of the effects of one's life or livelihood. This escape is, of course, illusory, for one man's producer is another's consumer, and even the richest and most mobile will soon find it hard to escape the noxious effluents and fumes of their various public services.

Let me emphasize that I am not talking about an evil that is merely contemporary or 'modern,' but one that is as old in America as the white man's presence here. It is an intention that was organized here almost from the start. 'The New World,' Bernard DeVoto (beroemde twintigste eeuwse Amerikaanse historicus, svh) wrote in The Course of Empire, 'was a constantly expanding market… Its value in gold was enormous but it had still greater value in that it expanded and integrated the industrial systems of Europe.'

And he continues: 'The first belt-knife given by a European to an Indian was a portent as great as  the cloud that mushroomed over Hiroshima… Instantly the man of 6000 B.C. was bound fast to a way of life that had developed seven and a half millennia beyond his own. […]

As war became deadlier in purpose and armament a surplus of women developed, so that marriage customs changed and polygamy became common. The increased usefulness of women in the preparation of pelts worked to the same end… Standards of wealth, prestige, and honor changed. The Indians acquired commercial values and developed business cults. They became more mobile.'

Die culturele genocide, 'the systematic destruction of traditions, values, language, and other elements which make a one group of people distinct from other groups,' voltrekt zich nu wereldwijd, als gevolg van de voortgaande gewelddadige globalisering.

The New World was a constantly expanding market; no limit to its development could be foreseen and indeed there was no limit. It's volume in gold was enormous but it had still greater value in that it expanded and integrated the industrial systems of Europe. It was thus a powerful force in the development of capitalism and nationalism.

In the sum it was cataclysmic. A culture was forced to change much faster than change could be adjusted to. All corruptions of culture produce breakdowns of morale, of communal integrity, and of personality, and this force was as strong as any other in the white man's subjugation of the red man.'

Wendell Berry voegt hieraan toe:

I have quoted these sentences from DeVoto because, the obvious differences aside, he is so clearly describing a revolution that did not stop with the subjugation of the Indians, but went on to impose substantially the same catastrophe upon the small farms and the farm communities, upon the shops of small local tradesman of all sorts, upon the workshops of independent craftsmen, and upon the households of citizens. It is a revolution that is still going on. The economy is still substantially that of the fur trade, still based on the same general kinds of  commercial items: technology, weapons, ornaments, novelties, and drugs. The one great difference is that by now the revolution has deprived the mass of consumers of any independent access to the staples of life: clothing, shelter, food, even water. Air remains the only necessity that the average user can still get for himself, and the revolution has imposed a heavy tax on that by way of pollution. Commercial conquest is far more thorough and final than military defeat. The Indian became a redskin, not by loss in battle, but by accepting a dependence on traders that made necessities of industrial goods. This is not merely history. It is a parable.

Colossal art has [a] value – human and soul-stirring – that should be incorporated permanently in all National expression – consciously and deliberately in scale with its importance [and] with the people whose lives it express.

Some few years ago, a sculptor visited me who showed me the head of a pin, on which he had carved the head of a president. Quite apart from my feelings regarding the purpose, the meaninglessness of this… In thinking of this, I realized how the whole process of life in its healthy form [is expansive] in character… great mass, has a greater emotional effect upon the observer than quality of form; that quality of form (when it is understood) affects the mind; volume shocks the nerve or soul-centers and is emotional in its effect.

Klein betekent daarentegen 'betekenisloos.'

A monument's dimensions should be determined by the importance to civilization of the events commemorated… We are cool-headedly, clear-mindedly setting down a few crucial, epochal facts regarding the accomplishments of the Old World radicals who shook the shackles of oppression from their light feet and fled despotism to people a continent; who built an empire and rewrote the philosophy of freedom and compelled the world to accept its wiser, happier forms of government.

Groot, Groter, Grootst! Shock and awe, 'volume shocks the nerve or soul-centers' en kan 'de wereld dwingen' deze superieure 'vormen' te 'accepteren.' Borglum:

We believe a nation's memorial should, like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt, have a serenity, a nobility, a power that reflects the gods who inspired them and suggests the gods they have become.

He saw life as a struggle between the courageous and the weak – different personality types that he often categorized by race. White people of European descent were like gods; the rest were lesser breeds without the law. Roosevelt once said of Native Americans: ‘I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are, and I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.’ To him Native Americans were a degenerate impediment to settlement of the American West; they deserved their near-extinction. So too did whites who threatened the prosperity of their race. Roosevelt wrote in 1914: ‘Criminals should be sterilized and feeble-minded persons forbidden to leave offspring behind them.’

Barack Obama’s admiration for the progressive Republicanism of Theodore Roosevelt ignores the true nature of both early 20th-century America and the president who embodied it…

Obama’s appropriation of Roosevelt’s record repeats a classic politician’s mistake of trying to fit the past to suit the present. This effort invariably distorts both.Roosevelt’s policies were motivated by Victorian prejudices that we would find uncomfortable today. He saw life as a struggle between the courageous and the weak – different personality types that he often categorised by race.
Roosevelt argued that government should reflect what he defined as the twin characteristics of the ‘white genius’: compassion and virility. Where Obama has expanded federal power in order to reform society, Roosevelt saw big government as an end in itself. After he left office he said: ‘I believe in power … The biggest [presidential] matters I managed without consultation with anyone, for when a matter is of capital importance, it is well to have it handled by one man only … I don’t think that any harm comes from the concentration of power in one man’s hands.’

Roosevelt personified his power-hungry ideology. In March 1909 he turned a safari in East Africa into a gruesome massacre. Roosevelt and his party killed or trapped more than 11,397 animals, from insects to elephants. They slaughtered 512 big game beasts, including six rare white rhinos. His self-conscious bravado sometimes transformed him into a superman. In 1912 he launched a third run for the presidency on a progressive ‘Bull Moose’ party ticket. During a tour of Wisconsin he was shot in the chest by an assassin. As he was not coughing up blood Roosevelt deduced that the bullet had not punctured a lung and so carried on speaking. ‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ he said, ‘I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose!’ Ninety minutes later he concluded his talk and strolled to the nearest hospital.

Bewijzen wie je bent via shock and awe.

We zullen zien.

All mighty God, from this pulpit of stone the American people render thanksgiving and praise to the new era of civilization brought forth upon this continent. Centuries of tyrannical oppression sent to these shores, God-fearing men to seek in freedom the guidance of the benevolent hand in the progress toward wisdom, goodness toward men and piety toward God. Holding no fear of the economic and political, chaotic clouds hovering over the earth. The consecrated Americans dedicate this nation before God, to exalt righteousness and to maintain mankind's constituted liberties so long as the earth shall endure.

It was equally important to Borglum to represent the spirit and ideals of America's political development and geographic expansion on a grand scale.

The Bigger The Better.

Two qualities were essential to Gutzon Borglum's conception for the memorial. First of all the monument must be large. He often said: 'A monuments dimensions should be determined by the importance of the events commemorated.'

Mount Rushmore is eternal. It will stand until the end of time. Ten thousand years from now our civilization will have passed without leaving a trace. A new race of people will inhabit the earth. They will come to Mount Rushmore and read the record we have made. Hence, let us place here, carved high, as close to heaven as we can, the words of our leaders, their faces to show posterity that these records will endure until the wind and rain alone shall wear them away.

Mount Rushmore is an unmistakable symbol of American pride and strength. Ironically, sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose a most unusual location to begin the momentous task of carving the portraits of four famous American presidents. Mount Rushmore resides within the boundaries of Harney National Forest and Custer State Park, two of the most detestable names in Sioux tradition. Both, General William S. Harney and General George Armstrong Custer led expeditions into the Black Hills, directly violating government treaties signed with the Sioux. What adds to this irony can be found in Borglum's inspiration to carve their colossal memorial. According to him, the presidents he chose to depict embodied what he believed to be the cornerstones of his country. Ultimately, the meaning of the word 'freedom' was defined differently by the US-government and the Native Americans. When that word is put in its proper context, it is easy to see why famous Indian leaders such as chief Joseph, Sitting Bull, Geronimo, and Red Cloud are admired as those who fought for their people's freedom and way of life. As the Mount Rushmore image of our founding fathers stands in the forefront of our consciousness that 'man has a right to be free and to be happy,' sadly this sentiment was never extended to the original occupants of the Black Hills, the Sioux. The famous Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, signed by both General Sherman and General Harney, stated that the Great Sioux Reservation would be set apart 'for the undisturbed use of the Indians' and that 'the United States solemnly agrees that no persons... shall ever be permitted to pas over, settle upon, or reside in the territory.' Let us make room for some other well-deserved historical figures. May we allow our history to tell their story as well.' David C. Behrens.

No tribe has the right to sell, even to each other, much less to strangers… Sell a country! Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth.

the white man is still troubled by primitive fears; he still has in his conscious the perils of this frontier continent… The man from Europe is still a foreigner and an alien… Men must be born and reborn to belong.
Toch is 'the white man' erin geslaagd de culturele genocide op de Indianen te voltooien, want in
1929, Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, initiated the project to honor Crazy Horse by writing to the Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, saying in part, 'My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know that the red man has great heroes, too.' The American sculptor had worked on Mount Rushmore in 1924 under Gutzon Borglum. Standing Bear and Ziolkowski scouted potential monument sites together. Ziolkowski suggested carving the memorial in the Wyoming Tetons where the rock was better for sculpting, but the Sioux leader insisted it be carved in the Black Hills, which are sacred to Lakota culture. After making models, Ziolkowski started blasting for the monument in 1948…
Ziolkowski died in 1982. His widow, Ruth Ziolkowski, took charge of the sculpture, overseeing work on the project from the 1980s to the 2010s. Ruth Ziolkowski decided to focus on the completion of Crazy Horse's face first, instead of the horse as her husband had originally planned. She believed that Crazy Horse's face, once completed, would increase the sculpture's draw as a tourist attraction, which would provide additional funding. She also oversaw the staff, which included seven of her children.
Sixteen years later in 1998, the face of Crazy Horse was completed and dedicated. The entire complex is owned by the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. Ruth Ziolkowski and seven of their ten children carried on work at the memorial. Ruth and their daughter, Monique Ziolkowski, a sculptor, has modified some of her father's plans to make the sculpture work better. The foundation commissioned reports from two engineering firms in 2009 to help guide completion of the project. Work commenced on the horse after two years of careful planning and measurements. Ruth Ziolkowski died May 21, 2014, at the age of 87.
'You ask me to dig for stones! shall I dig under her skin for her bones? Then when I die I cannot enter her body to be born again.' Wovoka. Paiute.

'He ranks among the most notable and iconic of Native American tribal members.'

Chief White Antelope, een Cheyenne in 1864: 'Nothing lives long - only the earth and the mountains.'

Uit een krantenknipsel dat ergens hangt: 'We've been involved in almost two hunderd years of cultural genocide.'

It does not matter where his body lies. There the grass is growing. But where his spirit is, that would be a good place to be.'

'The colonists who drove off the Indians came to be intolerably exploited by their imperial governments.'
