Een gewapende man heeft hem in de tuin van het klooster, waar de pater verbleef, door het hoofd geschoten. De man was gemaskerd. Het motief is nog onbekend.

De gouverneur van de provincie Homs, Talal al-Barazi, liet weten dat strijders van het extremistische al-Nusrafront verantwoordelijk zijn voor de moord. Het Nusrafront is een vertakking van al-Qaeda. Van der Lugt is vandaag al begraven op de terrein van het klooster
