Mr. Obama, Tear Down This Government
[Editor's Note: The following post is by TDV Editor-in-Chief, Jeff Berwick]
On June 12, 1987, in a speech near the Berlin Wall to commemorate Berlin's 750th anniversary, US President Ronald Reagan famously said to Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." The destruction of the wall would serve as a symbol of Gorbachev sincerely trying to increase freedom throughout the Eastern Bloc.
Today, August 13, marks the anniversary of the day the building of the Berlin Wall began. In honor of that sad day I say, "Mr. Obama, tear down this government."
The US government has now grown into something more emblematic of tyranny and misery than the Berlin Wall ever was. Not everyone today realizes this, but it will be clear across the board to the generations that look back at this era.
The Berlin Wall started as just a wire fence in 1961, but over the years it "bulked up" to its infamous, concrete, sophisticated version. In a similar manner the US government has bulked up over time, but mostly in the last few years since the Bush administration pulled off the biggest false flag scare tactic ever and pushed through the so-called Patriot Act. Since then the US government expanded its scope from merely stealing from its subjects with taxes and a central bank and interfering with their business via regulations and prohibition to militarizing its local police, spying on all electronic communications and giving itself the right to disappear citizens without trial.
Obama has reigned over what is arguably the greatest acceleration of the growth of federal power in history. He puts Bush to shame so handily that even his most ardent left progressive Hollywood supporters like Matt Damon are turning against him. Obama is the one who signed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 which gives the government the right to detain American citizens indefinitely without trial and without charging them with an actual crime. This has already apparently been used on freedom fighter Adam Kokesh who again was denied bail today after being brought out in shackles because a mushroom was planted in his house during an armed SWAT raid.
It's not just the outrageous, Soviet-style NDAA of course. There is also the NSA and programs like PRISM that the Soviets could only wish they had. The Soviets simply didn't have the technology the US has available today. The US government can so completely spy on and record every aspect of its citizens' lives that it makes the various secret police agencies of the Soviet empire look like bumbling Keystone Cops.
And whereas the Soviet wished to spread imperialist state communism beyond the Eastern Bloc to the entire rest of the world...the US is actually succeeding at conquering the world and turning resource-rich regions into occupied satellites while the rest of the Western world bows and scrapes before the US. In fact, just about the only part of the world that is resisting the US-led totalitarian creep is South America...which is why we chose the South American country of Chile as the site of Galt's Gulch
And not to mention that with only 5% of the world's population, the US "justice" system also puts the Soviet Union gulag system to shame with one quarter of the world's prison population.
Sadly, this government won't fade away as quietly as the Soviet Union. We can begin demanding the thugs at the top of the government tear down the colossal, oppressive structure they've built, but it may be a long time before they're forced to act on our demands. The unsustainable communist police state in Russia lasted for nearly a century after all. The best thing to do now is to get out of the way, like those fleeing East Germany before the Berlin Wall became virtually impassable for them.
That's why TDV offers citizenships and passports in countries with less oppressive governments. Though we call for Obama to be the one to "tear down the wall", we strongly suspect that the "wall" is still being fortified, and will continue to be for some time to come.
