Blood Meridian must be considered in historical context as ‘an indictment of the whole Western philosophy of Manifest Destiny, of moral and cultural rightness which has ruled our country from the Pilgrims to Vietnam, Nicaragua, and beyond.’
Edwin T. Arnold. Appalachian Journal 13. 1985
Through myths the psychology and world view of our cultural ancestors are transmitted to modern descendants, in such a way and with such power that our perception of contemporary reality and our ability to function in the world are directly, often tragically affected.
Richard Slotkin. Regeneration through Violence. The Mythology of the American Frontier. 1973
You have there the myth of the essential white America. All the other stuff, the love, the democracy, the floundering into lust, is a sort of by-play. The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted.
D. H. Lawrence. Studies in Classic American Literature. 1923
Our memory of the Indians connects us with the soil and the waters and the nonhuman life about us. They take for us the place of nymphs and satyrs and dryads – the spirits of the places. They are our ecological link with our biota – the organic environment which we strive to repudiate and destroy… the flooding tide, full of turmoil and whirlpools, of the unconscious, or the id, or the ‘dark forces of the blood’ – the actual, savage environment that reason and order and humane relationships can penetrate but cannot control.
Kenneth Rexroth. Classics Revisited LXI: Parkman’s History. 1968

The primary target of the author’s hard vionary indictment is human nature, as well as any ideology – scientific, social, or religious – that would claim that human perfectibility is in any way remotely attainable… The civilizing motives of American culture are dubious and oddly regressive, even brutal and avaricious. But since the novel is read in retrospect, in the context of a comparatively stable twentieth-century American security, the rule of law that would prohibit these impulses from full expression seems an absolute necessity, and civilizations by their very nature construct moral foundations from statutory frameworks of this sort… McCarthy explores the connection between the natural laws that govern the land and the thinking creatures that live interdependently in relation to it.
Geert Mak in Vrij Nederland. 3 november 2012.
McCarthy:
The good book says that he that lives by the sword shall perish by the sword, said the black.
The judge smiled, his face shining with grease. What right man would have it any other way? he said.
The good book does indeed count war an evil, said Irving. Yet there’s many a blood tale of war inside it.
It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way… War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence. War is god.

‘Oorlog is god,’ in die zin dat god als demiurg, volgens professor Frye, funtioneert als ‘a deity of malevolence and destruction whose argument sustains its power through the compelling logic of force and will, a force that through violence and destruction initiates and maintains the unity of exitence. But given that the judge is also the avatar of the Enlightenment, the literary creation of a late-twentieth-century writer fascinated with science and philosophy, his use of the word God may be figurative in the same sense that it is used by some modern physicists – Spinoza’s God – God as a metaphor for the unity of natural law and cosmological order, impersonal and inhuman, the antithesis of the anthropomorphic God of the Judeo-Christian tradition… In the judge’s hands, however, the Enlightenment notion of divine principle as natural law is not benign or morally neutral. It is not the deistic conception of an optimistic and progressive scientific positivism. Instead, it is actively malevolent and destructive. As such, McCarthy places the utopian impulses of scientific materialism under the severe and harsh light of skeptical inquiry.
Thus the formidable figure of Judge Holden, drawn from actual history but reconfigured in McCarthy’s imagination as the symbol and expression of evil in all its material, intellectual, and spiritual forms, becomes a dominant voice in the world of Blood Meridian.
judge Holden himself, who maintains his force and control because he alone recognizes the laws that bind, the laws of will and violence that at least metaphorically make a diety of malevolent destruction. The thematic tie that links the judge to antireligious materialism and philosophical naturalism becomes clear in his many monologues, in which he reveals himself as a natural historian and an avatar of Enlightenment science.
Professor Frye:

As the dark manifestation of Enlightenment science, the judge is the bleak personification of a version of positivism largely unacceptable to those who might argue for a model of scientific inquiry defined by optimistic, even progressivist notions of human improvement…

In het in 2012 verschenen boek over The Global Scramble For The World’s Last Recources wijst deze Amerikaanse hoogleraar Peace and World Security Studies erop dat

Skyrocketing commodity prices are among the most visible effects of the end of  ‘easy’ resources, and they will be felt by virtually everyone on the planet. But the transition away from an easy-resource world will not only affect individuals: it will also set the stage for ferocious competition between major corporations and for perilous wrangling among rival nation-states. These struggles, too, will shape the course of history.

Michael Klare:
And this is only the beginning. As the race for what’s left gains momentum, it will intrude with greater force into world affairs, threatening the survival of animal species, local communities, giant corporations, and entire nations. The global economy as it currently stands cannot grow and prosper without an increasing supply of numerous critical resources – but acquiring these materials will pose an ever-greater threat to the safety and stability of human society and the natural world…
Professor Klare:
In February 2005, David O’Reilly, the chairman and CEO of Chevron, startled participants at an annual oil-industry conference in Houston by declaring that their business was at an epochal turning point. After more than a hundred years during which the global availability of petroleum had always kept pace with rising world demand, he said, ‘Oil is no longer in plentiful supply. The time when we could count on cheap oil and even cheaper natural gas is clearly ending.’ In widely distributed advertisements, Chevron then put the matter in even starker terms: ‘The era of easy oil is over,’
Oil production per capita has declined from 5.26 barrels per year in 1980 to 4.44 barrels per year in 1993, but then increased to 4.79 barrels per year in 2005. In 2006, the world oil production took a downturn from 84.631 to 84.597 million barrels per day although population has continued to increase. This has caused the oil production per capita to drop again to 4.73 barrels per year.
One difficulty in forecasting the date of peak oil is the opacity surrounding the oil reserves classified as 'proven'. Many worrying signs concerning the depletion of proven reserves have emerged in recent years. This was best exemplified by the 2004 scandal surrounding the 'evaporation' of 20% of Shell's reserves.
Of the largest 21 fields, at least 9 are in decline. In April 2006, a Saudi Aramco spokesman admitted that its mature fields are now declining at a rate of 8% per year (with a national composite decline of about 2%). This information has been used to argue that Ghawar, which is the largest oil field in the world and responsible for approximately half of Saudi Arabia's oil production over the last 50 years, has peaked. The world's second largest oil field, the Burgan Field in Kuwait, entered decline in November 2005.
According to a study of the largest 811 oilfields conducted in early 2008 by Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), the average rate of field decline is 4.5% per year. The IEA stated in November 2008 that an analysis of 800 oilfields showed the decline in oil production to be 6.7% a year, and that this would grow to 8.6% in 2030
The wide use of fossil fuels has been one of the most important stimuli of economic growth and prosperity since the industrial revolution, allowing humans to participate in takedown, or the consumption of energy at a greater rate than it is being replaced. Some believe that when oil production decreases, human culture, and modern technological society will be forced to change drastically. The impact of peak oil will depend heavily on the rate of decline and the development and adoption of effective alternatives. If alternatives are not forthcoming, the products produced with oil (including fertilizers, detergents, solvents, adhesives, and most plastics) would become scarce and expensive.

In 2005, the United States Department of Energy published a report titled Peaking of World Oil Production: Impacts, Mitigation, & Risk Management.[132] Known as the Hirsch report, it stated, ‘The peaking of world oil production presents the U.S. and the world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase dramatically, and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social, and political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking.’
‘All the easy oil and gas in the world has pretty much been found. Now comes the harder work in finding and producing oil from more challenging environments and work areas.
William J. Cummings. Woordvoerder Exon-Mobil. December 2005
It is pretty clear that there is not much chance of finding any significant quantity of new cheap oil. Any new or unconventionale oil is going to be expensive.
Lord Ron Oxburgh. Former chairman of Shell, October 2008
[World] reserves are confused and in fact inflated. Many of the so-called reserves are in fact resources. They’re not delineated, they’re not available for production.
Sadad I. Al-Husseini. Former VP of Aramco, presentation to the Oil and Money conference. October 2007
