'Deskundigen' 93

For 20 million years, California’s entire northern coastal cusp, from Monterey Bay to the Oregon border, from water’s edge to as deep as forty miles inland, had been dominated by sequoia sempervirens, a forest of some 2 million acres. After little more than seventy years of logging, that giant ancient forest had disappeared from all but the least accessible locales along the North Coast.
David Harris. The Last Stand. The War Between Wall Street and Main Street Over California’s Ancient Redwoods. 1996

In The Last Stand schreef de Amerikaanse auteur David Harris:

Business Week described him as an ‘inscrutable’ and ‘enigmatic financier’ whose ‘quiet Texas charm and baby face conceal a steel-nerved dealmaker who has stripped down companies and squeezed out their shareholders… Day and night, Hurwitz studies takeover targets, poring through files or talking to former executives and investment bankers… Patience is one of the biggest attributes. So is tenacity… Hurwitz is tight-lipped about his next targetr. But he will not let himself become overconfident… Most of the risks, it seems, are borne by the companies unlucky enough to catch his eye… Charles Hurwitz doesn’t bark, he just bites.’ In an economy in which predators were playing all the lead roles, Charles was recognized as a predator of the first order by all concerned.

Terecht heeft Noam Chomsky opgemerkt dat corporations are more totalitarian than most institutions we call totalitarian in the political arena’ aangezien een ‘board of directors at the top of managers give orders, everyone follows orders.’

a national juggernaut. Fortune ranked it number 184 in its 1989 list of the nation’s 500 largest companies – first in sales increase, fourth in profit increase, and tenth in percentage of return to its investors – and Business Month named Maxxam the nation’s single fastest growing company for 1989, listing its interests as ‘lumber, aluminum, [and] real estate.’ […] The company’s board, of which he was chairman, was about to reward him with a 1989 salary payment of $3.97 million, an additional bonus of $3.5 million, and $497.000 worth of stock options. The remuneration package was larger than those of the chairman of General Motors, IBM, and General Electric combined.’

Raider? He found no small element of anti-semitism in the term, applied, as it often was, by Ivy goyem insiders to Jews who made money even without the Ivy Leaguers’ old-boy connections. What was he? Some kind of gunslinger? Buying and selling was what this country was all about and, as far as he was concerned, he was just being run down because he was better at it than most.

In 1985, the sleepy, well-fed, well-manicured, company town of Scotia, California, got a rude awakening. Its bread-and-butter, the Pacific Lumber Company was taken over by Maxxam. It was a classic ‘greed is good,’ 1980s event. The little logging company had a lot of land on which grew giant redwoods. The little logging company had been harvesting redwoods in a manner that allowed re-growth on a long-term basis. In other words, there were still giant redwoods as far as the eye could see. What Hurwitz apparently saw were chainsaws turning those trees into lumber for cash to pay off the high-demand junk bonds used in the little logging companys takeover. The company doubled its rate of logging, according to the Environmental Protection Information Center, a local watchdog group. A company document listed the 1997 tree cut rate as 253 million board feet. Thats a lot.
By threatening to cut down some of the vestiges of the ancient forest, Maxxam was able to cut a deal with taxpayers to buy out some of its property to avoid logging. The Headwaters forest, about 3,800 acres, cost taxpayers in the vicinity of $400 million in debt-for-nature swap… Neighbors have complained and filed lawsuits over the effects of increased logging. Its not just the barren hillsides that once hosted lush forests and wildlife, including the spotted owl, but the increased flooding that have severely impacted some of the local community. […]
In addition to the chance to plunder the forest, Hurwitz also seems to have noticed the company workers' well-stocked pension fund…  When Hurwitz took the company over, the pension fund disappeared as far as the workers were concerned. Later on, right before Christmas 2001, Hurwitz laid off 10 percent of the logging companys workforce… Even before the logging and the labor disputes, Hurwitz was in trouble for his business practices. Two federal agencies, the Treasury Departments Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS), and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), have brought actions against Hurwitz. Hurwitz allegedly had a hand in the demise of the United Saving Association of Texas in 1988. Backed by the FDIC, OTS was seeking $820 million against Hurwitz…

And after all that help from taxpayers, all that raiding of workers pension, all that nasty flooding from all that wicked logging of giant redwoods, what does Hurwitz have? As far as Maxxam goes, its latest report to the Securities & Exchange Commission show a shaky operation at best. In the first quarter of the year it showed a $55 million deficit. Meanwhile, a statement from last year to stockholders reveals Hurwitz has a total package of $1.8 million in income -- $786,000 in salary, $910,000 in bonus and $142,000 in 'other' recompense.

In 2003, the Company was sued civilly, by the District Attorney of Humboldt County, for fraud and violations of the California Business and Professions Code. The suit was predicated on the allegation that PALCO had affirmatively represented that its timber operations would have a similar environmental impact across all of its land holdings, when in fact there were wide variances and effects on differing watershed environments. The suit was ultimately dismissed by a California Superior Court Judge, but was later appealed to the California Court of Appeal. In January 2008, the California court of Appeal for the 1st district upheld the trial court's dismissal of the litigation, and the suit is for all practical purposes over. During the pendency of this litigation MAXXAM filed for Bankruptcy.

Het geplunderde bedrijf ‘announced in 2006 a desire to sell the homes (to the employees and retirees who currently live there) and commercial property. The company suggested that Scotia become part of Rio Dell, which is a small neighboring city located directly across the Eel River. In 2007, the company filed for bankruptcy. Additionally the need for employees has reduced from over 1,000 to around 300 in part due to a lack of logs.’

Tien tot twintig miloen jaar ‘natural selection... has organized ecosystems into a complex, symbiotic relationship of species.’ Dat kan domweg niet anders, want ‘American democracy is that citizens have the freedom to speak, but unless they are wealthy, not the authority to be heard.’ ‘In this view, such seeming injustices as exploitative bosses, terrible working conditions, and grinding poverty may not get righted in this world, but will certainly be compensated for in the next,’ een mentaliteit die ik tegenkwam zowel onder de  bevolking in de heuvels van Noord Californie tot die van Kentucky.

We are currently witnissing – and  ignoring – the sixth great extinction since the advent of life on earth. This is not the hysterical cry of some druid; it is cold scientific fact.

The history of life on earth has seen five great extinctions, all caused by natural phenomena. The last extinction, 65 million years ago, possibly caused by an asteroid, wiped out the dinosaurs. Everybody learns this in school. What we don’t usually learn is that up until the age of agriculture, species became extinct at roughly the rate of a few every million years – the same rate at which new species evolved. Or as E.O. Wilson has figured it, one species out of a million went extinct each year. That formula is known to biologists and archeologists as the ‘background rate.’ Now, because of rising temperatures, chemical pollution, the introduction of exotic plants, and forest fragmentation, species worldwide are disappearing at 1,000 to 10,000 times that rate. That is to say, roughly one species goes extinct every hour.

According to the World Conservation Union Red List, one in four mammals and one in eight bird species are in some degree of danger. Since 1980, habitat destruction has reduced our closest genetic and socially predisposed relative, the bonobo of West Africa, from 100,000 to merely 3,000. Of the 9,946 known bird species, 70 percent are declining in number.

Yeats in Het Wiel dichtte:

Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

Consider that one in every ten plant species contains anticancer compounds. In a purely selfish sense, Homo sapiens who care about the survival of their species should find the current rate of extinction rather alarming. I may think – I do think – that preserving species diversity enriches the very concept of life, but it also holds the secrets to the perpetuation of human life. Because in the end, the natural world does not need conserving. The planet has survived five extinctions; it can survive another one. No, it is we who need conserving. And it is the current logic of short-term profit, affluence, and convenience that had blinded us to the havoc we are inflicting on future generations.

With our levels of population and rates of consumption, it’s just a matter of time before we kill ourselves off.’ Krupa voegde er wel aan toe: ‘It’s not something I tell my freshmen.’

The roots of nearly all land plants form mycorrhizal symbioses with specialized soil fungi. The mycorrhizal fungi serve as extensions of plant roots, taking up nutrients and water and transferring them to the roots. In return, the mycorrhizal fungi receive their primary energy source in the form of simple sugars from plant photosynthates translocated to the roots. Sequoiadendron giganteum forms a type of mycorrhizae referred to as vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae… Forest fungi are one of the more numerous groups of forest organisms and play a critical role in nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and thus ecosystem productivity. They are also cornerstones in the complex forest food web. Forest plants have co-evolved mutualistic relationships with symbiotic root fungi such that their survival and fitness depends upon the healthy functioning of these fungi and vice versa. Just as forests invest tremendous capital in the form of photosynthates to fuel beneficial soil organisms, so too must we protect the unseen and overlooked belowground ecosystem.
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service
