Israel as a Rogue State 89

Avraham Burg delivered an interesting speech at the recent Jerusalem gay pride parade. The address was more important than what people initially thought while listening to him on that late afternoon in July, applauding each time a pleasing slogan - or a comment appropriately defiant of the religious establishment - was uttered.
"There is homophobia everywhere," Burg exclaimed. "There is religious homophobia that casts its fears and revulsions upon the Torah from Sinai, on divine revelation, as though the Almighty ordered us to despise some of our own, some of his own creation. But our belief is different. 'God created man in his own image.' This includes homosexuals and heterosexuals, lesbians and transgenders - each person is an image of the Divine, and anyone who denies that is tantamount to a denier of God."
Parts of this speech have been repeated in Israeli discourse about homosexuality and Judaism. The recognition that there is some fundamental contradiction between the declaration that "God created man in his own image," and the banning and denunciation of homosexuality in Leviticus, keeps coming up in discussions and writings focusing on homosexuality in religious Jewish society.
Jerusalem's gay pride paradeJerusalem's gay pride parade
However, Burg offers a truly original line of thought: His point is not an invitation to launch a vapid discussion about the "other," about openness and tolerance: Instead, he points to the idea that the mitzvahs, or commandments, stated in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 are erroneous: His belief is that the 157th of the 613 mitzvahs is a mistake; that homosexuality is neither a sin, nor an aberration or eclipse of nature. That is, rather than loosely supporting a "reform" aimed at allaying manifestations of religious "fear," Burg refers to the necessity of addressing the very foundations of Jewish faith and actually revising what is written in connection to it. He calls for a revision in the religious framework, on the most fundamental level, pertaining to the perception of man. Here and there, Burg's words reflect apprehension about this revision process. In a clever play on words, he refers to a "shadow of the divine image," and refrains from saying, less metaphorically, that "gay people are created in God's image exactly like all other people." He also asks: "How are we to bridge between the heart's love and the body's needs, and explicit religious commandments?" That is, sexual tendencies in Burg's view are subordinate; they are associated with bodily needs, and not with the most essential, divine-like, quality of love.
Furthermore, forgetting that just a moment earlier he has declared that people who deny that gay persons are created in the divine image are tantamount to those who deny the existence of God itself, Burg looks for a "bridge" between such love and the "explicit religious commandments."
Nonetheless, despite the fear, and within the fear, Burg says something that deviates from the empty slogans and indicates the correct, and only, way in which Judaism should relate to gay people, without lying to them, without branding them with various unnatural labels of shame. What is needed is recognition that the Book of Leviticus is the dreadful source of gay denunciation in all Western monotheistic thought, and upholding the commandments in Judaism preserves what Burg sees as the stain of archaic obscurantism.
In his speech, Burg seeks to reach deeply into the set of factors that brought about religious prohibitions in this sphere, and distinguishes between them and the persecution that occurs today in the Orthodox world. He perhaps finds it impossible to acknowledge the existence of ancient mistakes in our holy Torah, and believes it unworthy for a regular mortal to counter the axiomatic foundations of Jewish religion. But he said what he said. And what he said is light-years away from what any ultra-Orthodox rabbi could accept. He said that the foundations of Judaism rest upon a huge mistake, and that gay people are created in God's image.
Along with its horrific tragedies and great inventions, the 20th century belonged to women and to gay people. During the 1900s something occurred which did not happen in preceding centuries: Gays came out of the closet, and it eventually became clear to most people in the world that homosexuality is not a deviation of any sort; instead, it is one form of sort of love, one of the most fundamental forms of love. And even though mystery contains to cloud biological or genetic discourse surrounding love - it is clear that homosexuality ranks as one of the most natural types of love, and its long-standing imprint can be found throughout the natural world.
I am rehashing these commonplace understandings only because they pose a serious challenge to the original articles of monotheistic faith today. Darwinian evolution has for many decades "threatened" the biblical story of Creation, but cannot overcome it. Yet, that story has not really been damaged by Darwinian theory because the Book of Genesis is understood as a kind of symbol or "myth" - as a story located in a dimension that is somehow parallel to the realm of scientific understanding. But contemporary understanding of homosexuality does not resemble Darwinian theory. It places alongside the words of Leviticus elements which are approached on the very same level.
Gay people who live in the Orthodox world threaten it because they do not merely submit for its consideration a theory about the secrets of Creation, but rather represent something at the very heart of the forces of life - forces which cannot be soft-pedaled in a traditional manner by vapid appeals for the "strengthening" of faith, or for "general reform." Acceptance of homosexuality means nothing less than a conceptual overhaul in the religious world's conception of human existence.
There are today in Israel and elsewhere some well-known rabbis who understand that it would be a grave tactical error to continue to denounce homosexuality by appeals to the Torah. Knowing that the religion is at risk of succumbing to the penetration of "secular" values within the male-dominated circle of religious scholars who will ensure its future, these rabbis search for reliable ways to allow gay people to fully pursue life within demanding religious frameworks.
In contrast to other challenges posed by contemporary reality, homosexuality cannot be falsely adapted into the religion via the excision of various components of its lifestyle which are deemed troublesome; instead, it forces Judaism to reexamine and revise its own internal structure. When it encounters homosexuality, Judaism meets something strange. Lurking beneath the badge of shame, and biblical whelps about "do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman" - there is something dreadfully serious, and laden with astounding value and force: human desire and love.
Indeed, discussion of homosexuality by even the most severe circles of Orthodox Jewry have brought to the surface concepts such as emotional truths, desire and love in married life. Up to now it was, perhaps, possible to sweep these topics away, but recognition of homosexual love as something natural and legitimate cannot be gainsaid by sloganeering about wanton "secularism."
Should Judaism relate contemptuously to the great merits inherent in the conceptualization of human life in homosexuality, it will be vanquished in its confrontation with what it deems the "free world." That is because the force which enters Judaism by way of homosexuality is precisely what the religion has tried to stifle up to the present day: love.
Can Judaism become yet again a light unto the nations? Will it be the first of the monotheistic faiths to overturn what it dictated to them in ancient times?

Ezra Nawi verklaarde voorts tegen mij:

In boeken, vanaf kansels, etcetera.

Of helemaal niets, bijvoorbeeld.

Veel plezier daar, Stan, 'in the U.S. state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County'.

geworden.

Shocking Anti-Israel Letters to the Editor
"the graffiti was not hate speech..."
bij BlueStar PR Newsroom

Reader Commentaries
Graffiti and Israel
By Marc Sapir
Thursday October 02, 2008
Riya Bhattachargjee’s Sept. 25 article “Anti-Israel Graffiti Found Near Campus” is poor journalism. The title is fine, but the article leads with an erroneous use of the term “anti-Semitism,” which then serves as a justification for the outrage of Birgeneau and various Zionist student organizations. The UC chancellor seems to know that the graffiti was “hurtful to…members of the Jewish community.” That’s a half truth (many will agree with him of course) because many Jews, myself included, find nothing hurtful in this act aimed at countering deceptive Zionist propaganda.

In July, I spent 17 days inside Israel-Palestine. If you visit both sides of the green line extensively, there’s no way around the fact that Zionism has established a state that is fundamentally racist and that Israel today is a segregated and segregationist society, every bit as vicious as the Deep South before 1960. Israel intends to stay that way. Though many Israelis profess to differ, most do absolutely nothing about it. That there are some examples of incorporation of Palestinians into Israeli Jewish society and social life, such as the use of the soccer star Sowan Abbas, should not be surprising. I do not need to remind fellow Jews that the Nazi’s had their model Jews—eg the model Jewish community in Aushwitz Birkenau, symphony orchestras in most death camps and the people portrayed in the movie the Counterfeiters—who they used to advantage either as a propaganda screen to conceal what was going on or for other purposes.

“Israel is very progressive when it comes to things like gay rights, women and the environment…,” said Pini Altman of Blue StarPR the public relations firm that is promoting Israel’s positive image. This too is interesting to me because it is true that Israel is progressive on gay rights and women’s rights (we met with an ethnically integrated LGBT group who told us it is much more dangerous to be a Palestinian Arab in Israel than it is to be gay). However, much of the blather about the environment has been used as a cover to drive Palestinians from their own lands (both within the 1948 borders and in the 1967 conquered-occupied areas) under a pretense of reforestation and reclamation. After a while the seized land is usually given over to settlement cities and Israeli farmers and business concerns, by the thousands and thousands of
acres.

Can the cutting down of 300,000 Palestinian olive trees by Israel’s army ever be justified? Can this be understood as anything other than an attack on the survival of an entire agrarian-based people? How about when much of the land in the West Bank’s Jordan valley has been reclaimed from Palestinians for the planting of 5 million date palms now owned by Israeli farmers and Israeli corporations aiming for dominance in the international date market? Or the stealing of 80 percent of the water under the occupied lands which is now used to supply Israeli cities and farms, while 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank are forced to pay 3-5 times higher rates for the 20 percent of the water they may buy from Israel’s water company. Mind you the Palestinians have little or no money because Israel has consciously destroyed their economy by preventing the flow of goods—mainly agricultural—and labor via a vast network of military blockades. And most Palestinians can not ever attain basic citizenship rights. Most Bedouin Arabs inside Israel’s Negev desert are simply declared to be criminals living “illegally” on state lands, their villages removed from all maps. Those villages are not allowed basic public services such as sewers, electric power and so forth, while Israel sprays toxic defoliants on lands they plant with grass for their herds, and gives away their land to Jewish Israelis.

The six-pointed Star of David was a Jewish religious symbol. It’s on the front of every Torah. Zionism appropriated the Star of David as a political symbol to represent Israel, a Jewish state. Jews who do not believe in religious states—Jewish, Christian, Hindu or Muslim—are many, but our identity has been hijacked by people who then call us “self-hating” Jews. In truth, we represent the American mainstream, for most Americans oppose the idea of states based upon religious groups as undemocratic. When someone’s graffiti equates the Star of David with the Nazi swastika, anyone may voice their strong disagreement with that equation. They are free to disagree. But the attempt to label that equation anti-Semitic is a ruse, a lie. Look at the flag. The Star of David is today the representation of the State of Israel, a state that would like to elimininate what it calls it’s Arab “demographic problem.” When the Zionists in power in Israel (who, ironically, are not religious fundamentalists) talk about the “demographic time-bomb” (and they do so repeatedly), the argument is often heard that if they do not ethnically cleanse the Palestinians from the land reaching from the Mediterranean to the Jordan river Jews in Israel will soon be in the minority. This is an expression of racism against the Palestinian people. Today (though not 50 years ago) anyone in the United States who would argue that government must hatch schemes to prevent the U.S. population from one day becoming majority ethnic minority people (black, Latino, Asian) would be seen for the racists they are. And their schemes would be seen as plans for ethnic cleansing. The power of Zionism in the United States and the distortions by the media and political class here to prop up support for Israeli colonialism prevent many people from seeing the self-evident truth that we, Americans, through our government’s support of Israel, are a party to this catastrophe.

I will be giving a slide show based upon my visit to the Middle East, entitled, “The Political Geography of the Jewish State—Zionism’s ‘Facts on the Ground,’” at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.

The Golan region is Syrian territory which has been illegally occupied by Israel since the Six Day War in June, 1967. Following this illegal occupation, Israel forced 131,000 inhabitants (whose descendants now number approximately 500,000 international displaced persons) to leave the Golan and destroyed two cities, 130 villages and 112 agricultural farms.

In December 1981, the Knesset passed the Golan Heights Law, which attempted to illegally annex the Golan by placing the occupied territory under Israeli law, jurisdiction and administration. The UN Security Council responded later that same December by passing Resolution 497 which affirmed that ‘the acquisition of territory by force is inadmissible’ and asserted that ‘the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdictions and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect’.

UN Resolution 59/33, on 31 January, 2005 reaffirmed the 1981 Resolution and emphasised ‘the illegality of the Israeli settlement construction and other activities in the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967’.

The people of the Golan have continuously resisted attempts at the ‘Israelisation’ of their region, with this resistance culminating in a five month general strike in 1982. Not a single state has granted recognition to Israel’s annexation of the Syrian Golan, and numerous UN resolutions since 1981 have reasserted that the occupation is illegal under international law.

International law and the illegality of profiting from occupation

The status of Israel in the occupied territories is that of a ‘belligerent occupier.’ The laws of belligerent occupation can be found in the Hague Regulations 1907 and the Geneva Conventions (and their protocols) 1949. It is clear that the exploitation of natural resources for commercial gain in an occupied territory (such as the water being utilised by Eden Springs Ltd in the Golan) is prohibited under international law.

The Hague Regulations IV of 1907 provide that ‘private property ...must be respected...[and] cannot be confiscated’ (Art 46). ‘Pillage is formally forbidden’ (Art 47) and property and resources may not be requisitioned except for the needs of the occupying army and must be paid for by the occupying power (Art 52). Furthermore, the occupying power ‘shall be regarded only as administrator and usufructuary of public buildings, real estate, forests, and agricultural estates belonging to the hostile State, and situated in the occupied country. It must safeguard the capital of these properties, and administer them in accordance with the rules of usufruct’ (Art 55).

The Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War 1949forbids ‘any destruction by the occupying power of real or personal property belonging individually or collectively to private persons, or to the State, or two other public authorities, or to social or cooperative organisations’ (Art 53) and further states that ‘the occupying power may not requisition foodstuffs, articles or medical supplies available in the occupied territory’. The Commentary to the Convention asserts that the occupying power ‘may not requisition supplies for use by its own population’.

Sonja zei

The existence of Eden Springs Ltd is all the more offensive to the people of the Golan in light of the fact that Israel is notorious for its expropriation of water resources in the region. Shortly after occupation began, the Israeli authorities began implementing numerous policies, in the guise of military orders, aimed at controlling the water resources of the region. Native Syrian inhabitants were forbidden from accessing or utilizing the water for agricultural purposes, which had a devastating impact on the primarily agricultural economy. In contrast, unlimited amounts of water were provided to the settlements at a low cost.

Under the Israeli Water Law of 1959, all water resources in the region became the property of the state of Israel. The drilling of wells and pools was prohibited in the mid-1970s. Lake Ram, which collects 2-3 million m3of water per year and was used for livestock and local irrigation, was confiscated around the same time, and the water piped to Jewish settlements.

Fearful of further restrictions, the local Syrian farmers erected iron tanks in their apple orchards as a way of accessing water. The Israeli authorities banned the construction of these tanks between 1983 and 1985. Consequently heavy fines were imposed on the farmers and several of the tanks destroyed on grounds that all water resources, even rainwater, belonged to the state.

Proost!

@anzi
