'Gaza: The Lies of War‏
Israel’s Lies
Henry Siegman

23 January 2009
BY Henry Siegman
Western governments and most of the Western media have accepted a number of Israeli claims justifying the military assault on Gaza: that Hamas consistently violated the six-month truce thatIsrael observed and then refused to extend it; that Israel therefore had no choice but to destroy Hamas’s capacity to launch missiles into Israeli towns; that Hamas is a terrorist organisation, part of a global jihadi network; and that Israel has acted not only in its own defence but onbehalf of an international struggle by Western democracies against this network.
I am not aware of a single major American newspaper, radio station or TV channel whose coverage ofthe assault on Gaza questions this version of events. Criticism of Israel’s actions, if any (andthere has been none from the Bush administration), has focused instead on whether the IDF’scarnage is proportional to the threat it sought to counter, and whether it is taking adequatemeasures to prevent civilian casualties.
Middle East peacemaking has been smothered in deceptive euphemisms, so let me state bluntly thateach of these claims is a lie. Israel, not Hamas, violated the truce: Hamas undertook to stop firing rockets into Israel; in return, Israel was to ease its throttlehold on Gaza. In fact, during the truce, it tightened it further. This was confirmed not only by every neutralinternational observer and NGO on the scene but by Brigadier General (Res.) Shmuel Zakai, a formercommander of the IDF’s Gaza Division. In an interview in Ha’aretz on 22 December, he accused Israel’s government of having made a ‘central error’ during the tahdiyeh, the six-month period of relative truce, by failing ‘to take advantage of the calm to improve, rather than markedly worsen, the economic plight of the Palestinians of the Strip . . . When you create a tahdiyeh, and the economic pressure on the Strip continues,’ General Zakai said, ‘it is obvious that Hamas will try to reach an improved tahdiyeh, and that their way to achieve this is resumed Qassam fire . . . You cannot just land blows, leave the Palestinians in Gaza in the economic distress they’re in, and expect that Hamas will just sit around and do nothing.’
The truce, which began in June last year and was due for renewal in December, required both parties to refrain from violent action against the other. Hamas had to cease its rocket assaults and prevent the firing of rockets by other groups such as Islamic Jihad (even Israel’s intelligence agencies acknowledged this had been implemented with surprising effectiveness), and Israel had to put a stop to its targeted assassinations and military incursions. This understanding was seriously violated on 4 November, when the IDF entered Gaza and killed six members of Hamas. Hamas responded by launching Qassam rockets and Grad missiles. Even so, it offered to extend the truce, but only on condition that Israel ended its blockade. Israel refused. It could have met its obligation to protect its citizens by agreeing to ease the blockade, but it didn’t even try. It cannot be said that Israel launched its assault to protect its citizens from rockets. It did so to protect its right to continue the strangulation of Gaza’s population.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that Hamas declared an end to suicide bombings and rocket fire when it decided to join the Palestinian political process, and largely stuck to it for more than a year. Bush publicly welcomed that decision, citing it as an example of the success of his campaig for democracy in the Middle East. (He had no other success to point to.) When Hamas unexpectedly won the election, Israel and the US immediately sought to delegitimise the result and embraced Mahmoud Abbas, the head of Fatah, who until then had been dismissed by Israel’s leaders as a ‘plucked chicken’. They armed and trained his security forces to overthrow Hamas; and when Hamas – brutally, to be sure – pre-empted this violent attempt to reverse the result of the first honest democratic election in the modern Middle East, Israel and the Bush administration imposed the blockade.
Israel seeks to counter these indisputable facts by maintaining that in withdrawing Israeli settlements from Gaza in 2005, Ariel Sharon gave Hamas the chance to set out on the path to statehood, a chance it refused to take; instead, it transformed Gaza into a launching-pad for firing missiles at Israel’s civilian population. The charge is a lie twice over. First, for all its failings, Hamas brought to Gaza a level of law and order unknown in recent years, and did so without the large sums of money that donors showered on the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. It eliminated the violent gangs and warlords who terrorised Gaza under Fatah’s rule. Non-observant Muslims, Christians and other minorities have more religious freedom under Hamas rule than they would have in Saudi Arabia, for example, or under many other Arab regimes.
The greater lie is that Sharon’s withdrawal from Gaza was intended as a prelude to further withdrawals and a peace agreement. This is how Sharon’s senior adviser Dov Weisglass, who was also his chief negotiator with the Americans, described the withdrawal from Gaza, in an interview with Ha’aretz in August 2004:
What I effectively agreed to with the Americans was that part of the settlements [i.e. the major settlement blocks on the West Bank] would not be dealt with at all, and the rest will not be dealt with until the Palestinians turn into Finns . . . The significance [of the agreement with the US] is the freezing of the political process. And when you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state and you prevent a discussion about the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem. Effectively, this whole package that is called the Palestinian state, with all that it entails, has been removed from our agenda indefinitely. And all this with [President Bush’s] authority and permission . . . and the ratification of both houses of Congress.
Do the Israelis and Americans think that Palestinians don’t read the Israeli papers, or that when they saw what was happening on the West Bank they couldn’t figure out for themselves what Sharon was up to? Israel’s government would like the world to believe that Hamas launched its Qassam rockets because that is what terrorists do and Hamas is a generic terrorist group. In fact, Hamas is no more a ‘terror organisation’ (Israel’s preferred term) than the Zionist movement was during its struggle for a Jewish homeland. In the late 1930s and 1940s, parties within the Zionist movement resorted to terrorist activities for strategic reasons. According to Benny Morris, it was the Irgun that first targeted civilians. He writes in Righteous Victims that an upsurge of Arab terrorism in 1937 ‘triggered a wave of Irgun bombings against Arab crowds and buses, introducing a new dimension to the conflict’. He also documents atrocities committed during the 1948-49 war by the IDF, admitting in a 2004 interview, published in Ha’aretz, that material released by Israel’s Ministry of Defence showed that ‘there were far more Israeli acts of massacre than I had previously thought . . . In the months of April-May 1948, units of the Haganah were given operational orders that stated explicitly that they were to uproot the villagers, expel them, and destroy the villages themselves.’ In a number of Palestinian villages and towns the IDF carried out organised executions of civilians. Asked by Ha’aretz whether he condemned the ethnic cleansing, Morris replied that he did not:
A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them. There was no choice but to expel that population. It was necessary to cleanse the hinterland and cleanse the border areas and cleanse the main roads. It was necessary to cleanse the villages from which our convoys and our settlements were fired on.'

In Het Zoeklicht schrijft directeur ds.

Israeli Supreme Court Rejects Petitions filed by Human Rights Organizations Concerning Attacks against Medical Teams, Evacuation of the Wounded, and Repair of Electricity and Water Infrastructure in the Gaza Strip

In early January 2009, human rights groups in Israel submitted two petitions to the Supreme Court against the Israeli military challenging its actions against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip in violation in international humanitarian and human rights law. The petitions were based on information that the army was shelling and firing at medical teams and ambulances in Gaza, preventing and delaying the evacuation of the injured, and that essential infrastructure, including the electricity and water systems necessary to the survival of the civilian population had broken down.
The Supreme Court rejected the two petitions on 19 January 2009. In its ruling, the court determined that there was no legal dispute between the parties regarding the obligations that apply to the State of Israel and their relevance to the petitions. According to the ruling, the disagreement turned on the way in which these obligations were fulfilled (para.17 of the ruling). The court ruled that, in light of the establishment by the state of humanitarian mechanisms, “we must hope that the humanitarian array of measures will operate as required and in accordance with its obligations” (paras. 23 and 27).
The court unquestioningly accepted the state’s claims to have respected international law, despite the evidence and affidavits presented by the petitioners, reports from international aid organizations and media reports that clearly showed repeated violations. Although the petitioners had sought urgent and immediate action, the court issued its rulings about two weeks after the petitions were filed and two days after the end of fighting. The timing of the decision indicates that the court did not give serious consideration to the principle of an effective of legal remedy, which mandates a prompt hearing and decision.
The first petition was filed by Adalah Attorney Fatmeh El-'Ajou on 6 January 2009 in Adalah's own name and on behalf of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHR-I), the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), Gisha, Bimkom, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), HaMoked, and Yesh Din. The petition challenged Israeli military attacks targeting ambulances and medical teams engaged in carrying out their duties in assisting the wounded, and the delays imposed by Israel on the evacuation the injured to hospitals in Gaza for medical treatment.
The second petition was filed on 7 January 2009 by Attorney Sari Bashi of Gisha in Gisha's own name and on behalf of Bimkom, ACRI, PCATI, HaMoked, Yesh Din, Adalah, PHR-I, and Rabbis for Human Rights. In the petition, the organizations demanded that the court order the State of Israel to ensure the supply and transport of fuel to Gaza, in particular to power plants and the water and sewage systems. The petitioners further demanded the repair of the electricity grid, particularly the electric lines that were disabled due to the collapse of the water and sewage systems. As a result, the electric supply was cut off from approximately one million Gaza residents, hospitals, and vital systems, around 800,000 people had no water, and raw sewage was flowing through the streets.
The petitioners provided the court with frequent updates regarding the facts on the ground and the unmet humanitarian needs of civilians. Data was brought before the court concerning attacks against medical teams, even after they had coordinated their evacuation work with the Israeli army, as demanded by Israel; oftentimes medical assistance delays lasted for many days. Data on the status of Gaza’s electricity and water and the ramifications for the health systems and the civilian population were also provided to the court, as well as reports by UN and other humanitarian agencies. Both sets of petitioners argued that, despite the existence of humanitarian mechanisms, violations of IHL continued to be committed regarding the protection of medical teams and facilities, the evacuation of the wounded, protecting the civilian population and ensuring vital services.
In response to this evidence, the state argued that the court should dismiss the petitions on the grounds that the petitioners' cases were non-justiciable (matters inappropriate to bring before a court). Further, the state claimed that Israel was adhering to the applicable rules of IHL. Concerning the first petition, the respondents announced that the guidelines issued to the military forces operating in the field are to avoid attacking medical teams and ambulances performing their duties, except in cases where it is clear that the ambulances were being abused for belligerent purposes against the army. The state also claimed that the army was enabling the evacuation of the injured for medical treatment subject to the “complex realities” of the fighting. These claims are contradicted by the petitioners' evidence according to which medical teams were unjustifiably attacked in violation of these guidelines.
Regarding the electricity cuts and damage to infrastructure, the state argued that in the context of the hostilities it had been impossible to completely avoid striking the local electric grid, adding that even in the midst of fighting efforts were made to repair damaged electric lines. The state further claimed to be working to allow a maximal supply of electricity to enter the Gaza Strip, subject to the security constraints. The state did not respond to the petitioners' evidence, which indicated that the scope of the attacks on Gaza’s infrastructure was far wider than the respondents had depicted before the court, and that hundreds of thousands of people and vital service buildings remain without electricity and water supplies.Case Citations: HCJ 201/09, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, et al. v.

Met of zonder bestand blijft ‘de Joodse natie’ de Palestijnse bevolking het leven tot een hel maken, zoals Karen Koning Abu Zaid, hoofd van de United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), aan het begin van 2008 duidelijk maakte toen ze schreef "Gaza is on the threshold of becoming the first territory to be intentionally reduced to a state of abject destitution, with the knowledge, acquiescence and - some would say - encouragement of the international community." Zie: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jan/23/israelandthepalestinians.world

Weissink is ziek.

Rechts zegt: oorlog is altijd prima.

'Zionist colonization must either stop, or else proceed regardless of the native population. Which means that it can proceed and develop only under the protection of a power that is independent of the native population behind an iron wall, which the native population cannot breach.'

Voor wie geinteresseerd is: 'Vladimir Jabotinsky, November 1923, father of the Zionist right, ideological mentor of Menchem Begin, Ariel Sharon, the Likud Party and the expansionist policies of the successive Israeli governments, from the right as well as from the left.
Jabotinsky admired Mussolini, and his movement repeatedly sought affiliation with and assistance from Rome.'
Zie: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4866316426876380615
Bronstein zei me het volgende:

Obama 79

'Obama reaches out to Iran with message to Muslims Al-Arabiya is chosen for new President's first formal televised interview
By Leonard Doyle in Washington
Wednesday, 28 January 2009
Barack Obama has extended a hand of peace to Iran, provided that it "unclench its fist" and has said the time is ripe for Israel and the Palestinians to resume peace negotiations.
For his first formal televised interview as President, Mr Obama choseal-Arabiya, the pan-Arab voice of political reform, to send a powerful and conciliatory signal to the Muslim world. There was a striking shift in tone and substance from his predecessor George Bush, who branded Iran part of the "Axis of Evil" and rejected face-to-face talks with America's enemies.
Mr Obama offered dialogue with Tehran and promised a new American readiness to listen to those who oppose it in the Middle East.
It is "important for us to be willing to talk to Iran, to express very clearly where our differences are but where there are potential avenues for progress," he said, echoing his inaugural address last week when he declared, "If countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us."
Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, underscored the gesture, saying yesterday it was now up to Iran to "engage meaningfully," by making the first move. Washington accuses Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons, but Iran says its atomic programme is designed with energy production in mind.
The two countries have not had direct diplomatic relations for three decades and yesterday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari told reporters in Athens that it was too early to say whether relations would improve with Mr Obama as president. "We will wait and see [if there is] change or just slogans," he said.
The interview with Dubai-based al-Arabiya was recorded on Monday. Mr Obama appeared to go out of his way to rebrand America's image in the Muslim world, declaring: "My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy."
Then, with words never previously heard from a US president, he said: "I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries... the largest one, Indonesia. And so what I want to communicate is the fact that, in all my travels throughout the Muslim world, what I've come to understand is that regardless of your faith – and America is a country of Muslims, Jews, Christians, non-believers – regardless of your faith, people all have certain common hopes and common dreams."
Mr Obama's selection of al-Arabiya over its better-known rival al-Jazeera or the US-funded network al-Hurra emphasised his desire to reach out to the Muslim world without seeming to pander to America's fiercest critics.
al-Arabiya – founded in 2003 in deliberate counterpoint to al-Jazeera, which its Saudi Arabian founders saw as too sympathetic to the Jihadist cause – has an audience of 23 million.
Hady Amr, director of the Brookings Doha Centre, an arm of the US think-tank in the Qatari capital, described the decision to make the first presidential interview with an Arabic news network as "stunning." He said:
"President Obama has made it absolutely clear... that a central priority will be repairing America's relations with the Muslim world. If that's his objective, I'd say he's been hitting home run after home run."'

Obama 78

Hours after an interview with the president is broadcast across the Arab world, special envoy George Mitchell begins a tour of the region.
Cairo - Fronting charm on the airways and deploying diplomacy away from the camera's flash, the Obama administration has landed in the Middle East.
Hours after an interview with President Obama was broadcast across the Arab world by satellite channel Al Arabiya, special U.S. envoy George J. Mitchell arrived in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the fate of the Gaza Strip.
It was a two-track choreography designed to inspire confidence among the region's political leaders and win over an Arab street long distrustful of Washington.
"My job is to communicate the fact that the United States has a stake in the well-being of the Muslim world, that the language we use has to be a language of respect. I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries," the president told Al Arabiya. "My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy. We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect."
That is refreshing talk here, but the Middle East, where so many U.S. presidents have watched good intentions vanish in bloodshed, extremism and bickering over maps and borders, demands more than conciliatory remarks and eloquent assurances.
The most pressing matter the White House faces is keeping the situation calm in Gaza, where a clash Tuesday broke a 10-day truce and left an Israeli soldier and a Palestinian dead.
Israel's 22-day battle with the militant Hamas movement, which ended Jan. 18 and left about 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead, widened the divide between U.S. allies in the region, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and nations such as Syria and Iran that condemn America's close ties to Israel.
Each country, the threats it faces and the benefits it could gain, was factored into Obama's TV interview late Monday, which drew applause and criticism from blogs as well as musings in the marketplace.
"He's kind of hit the ground running," said Gamal Abdel Gawad, a political analyst at the Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo. "Even though we don't have a clue about the substance of what will happen, there is a change in mood and temperament, and these are very important. It will help defuse the tension in the Middle East, not only over how Arabs view the close relationship between the U.S. and Israel but also between divisive Arab regional factions."
Fawwaz Traboulsi, a columnist for the Lebanese newspaper As Safir, was not as impressed. He said Obama did not show enough concern for the destruction of Gaza. He also compared decades of elusive Palestinian-Israeli peace with the efforts by Mitchell that led in 1998 to the Good Friday peace agreement in Northern Ireland between Roman Catholics and Protestants.
"It is strange to see [Obama] address the Arab world and not have a word to say about the plight of the people in Gaza or the embargo on the Gaza Strip," Traboulsi said. "What we saw in Northern Ireland is that for the Irish Republican Army to disarm, the demands of Catholics had to be seriously listened to. Similarly here, if you want peace, you need to listen to the Palestinians who want self-determination and to build their own state. Are Americans ready to accept these demands?"
Mitchell's trip to Egypt, Israel, the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and two European capitals is expected to focus on how to rebuild Gaza and prevent Hamas from rearming, to call for a new dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians and to achieve cooperation between Hamas and Fatah, a rival faction led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Washington has downplayed the possibility of diplomatic breakthroughs, saying Mitchell - who is scheduled to start off his meetings by sitting down today with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak - will spend much of his time listening.
But some Arab leaders are expecting an aggressive approach by Obama. Saudi King Abdullah, one of Washington's main allies in the region, warned last week that a 2002 Arab peace proposal would not remain on the table for long. Arabs contend that the deal, which offers Israel normalized relations with all Arab states in return for withdrawing from territory it occupied during the 1967 Middle East War, has not been taken seriously.'

'Gazan children denied treatment abroad

Jonathan Cook
The National
January 28. 2009

JERUSALEM // For four days running, an ambulance has driven 15-year-old Amira Ghirim from Shifa Hospital in Gaza to the Rafah border in the hope that she will be allowed to cross into Egypt and then on to France, where she has been promised emergency surgery.

Amira’s left arm and thigh were crushed and her internal organs damaged by falling rubble when a shell hit her home in the Tel al Hawa neighbourhood of Gaza City in the final days of Israel’s offensive. The attack killed her father, brother and sister, leaving her an orphan.

But, despite her urgent need for surgery, Amira has been turned away at the border each time, said her aunt, Mona Ghirim. “Each morning we arrived at the crossing and the Egyptian soldiers cursed us and told us to go away.”

Ms Ghirim said Amira’s condition has been deteriorating because of the long periods out of hospital. Yesterday, after hearing news that the border would remain shut, they decided to abandon the journey. “She is very ill and these futile trips are not helping.”

Amira is one of four children who have been offered potentially life-saving surgery by a team of doctors in France. But she and the other children appear to be victims of a bureaucratic wrangle involving the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and Egypt.

Mohammed Salem, the head of a medical group based in France known as Pal Med, was among the doctors accompanying the children through the crossing last Friday. He said the doctors had been allowed through, but the ambulances carrying the children were blocked. When the doctors tried to return, they were denied entry into Gaza.

“We do not know why the children were refused,” he said. “We had organised all the relevant papers and documents. We were told once we passed through Rafah that the ambulance carrying the children would be allowed to follow.”

The reason appears to be a sudden change of policy by the Palestinian health ministry in Ramallah, which issued a statement the day before the four children tried to leave Gaza saying that it believed there was “no more reason to refer any more children for treatment abroad”.

Nearly 1,300 Palestinians were killed and a further 5,300 injured during Israel’s 22-day attack on Gaza.

In the days immediately after Israel’s declaration of a ceasefire on Jan 18, hundreds of seriously wounded Gazans were transferred through the Rafah crossing into Egypt. Many are being treated in Egyptian hospitals, and others have been sent abroad.

But in recent cases, Egyptian officials appear to have preferred to abide by the wishes of the Palestinian health ministry than create diplomatic friction.

Two of the four children, Hazem Abu Odeh, 12, and Iman Khadum, nine, need surgery to stop bleeding from their kidneys.

The fourth, Alla Abu Dagan, 16, suffered multiple fractures and abdominal wounds from a shell blast.

A diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Amira and the other children had probably been caught in a political row resulting from the split between the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, and the Hamas government in Gaza.

“The PA wants to show it is exercising authority in Gaza, too. It is using its control over the international medical aid reaching Gaza as a way to show it is in charge and making things happen,” the source said.

The Palestinian health ministry was unavailable for comment.

Ms Ghirim said her niece had been through a terrible trauma. “After the house was shelled, she crawled out of the building to get help, but found the street deserted. She slept out in the open and told me she could hear the voices of soldiers speaking Hebrew all night.

“In the morning she crawled 500 metres to another house to hide. She stayed there until she was eventually found when the owner returned home. He said she was in a shocking condition, covered in blood and dust.”

International medical organisations have been carrying out their own assessments of conditions inside Gaza over the past few days. The World Health Organization is due to issue a report in the coming days.

A team of 12 Israeli Arab doctors from Physicians for Human Rights returned on Sunday. They warned that Gaza’s health care system had been stretched to its very limits and that wounded patients were at risk of dying.

Riyad Haddad, a surgeon at the Carmiel Medical Centre in Haifa, said: “There has been a lot of medical aid, but the treatment doctors are able to offer has been severely compromised by Gaza’s many months of being cut off from the rest of the world.”

He said technicians lacked training to operate modern hospital equipment, doctors had not attended medical seminars on the latest developments in their fields, and there was a severe shortage of trained nursing teams.

He also said that Gaza lacked the psychologists needed to deal with the vast scale of mental trauma inflicted on the population.

Of the thousands of injured, more than 600 would be left with permanent disabilities, he said. “Gaza badly needs proper rehabilitation centres to cope with that number of disabled.”

Dr Haddad said many of Gaza’s doctors he spoke with had reported unusual and difficult-to-treat injuries that appeared to be the result of Israel using experimental weapons during the offensive.

He also warned that unexploded ordnance was already claiming the lives of children, who were playing with munitions lying among the rubble. Last weekend the International Committee of the Red Cross said unexploded ordnance posed a “major new danger” to the civilian population.

Gaza may yet face major epidemics such as cholera that could claim many more lives, Dr Haddad said. “Although most of the bodies have been recovered from the rubble, you can see and smell that there are dead animals – sheep, goats, dogs and cats – everywhere.”'

Het belang van de ideologische versie van de werkelijkheid werd in de achttiende eeuw door de grote Schotse Verlichtings-filosoof David Hume benadrukt toen hij schreef over 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few' and 'the implicit submission with which the men resign their own sentiments and passions to those of their rulers.' Hume concludeerde: "When we enquire by what means this wonder is brought about we shall find, that as Force is always on the side of the governed, the governors have nothing to support them but opinion. It is therefore, on opinion only that government is founded; and this maxim extends to the most despotic and most military governments, as well as to the most free and most popular.'

Travel advisory issued for top IDF officers State expresses concern over international human rights groups' intention to file war crimes charges against military personnel with The Hague, local European courts; says officers planning to travel must contact Judge Advocate General's Office first Tova Tzimuki.' Zie: http://www.ynetnews.com/Ext/Comp/ArticleLayout/CdaArticlePrintPreview/1,2506,L-3658823,00.html.

'U.S. decision to back Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the recent turmoil virtually guarantees an escalation in violence. Abbas has installed an unelected "emergency" government to replace the democratically elected Hamas-led national unity government. Some have portrayed Hamas' takeover of Palestinian Authority security compounds in Gaza as a "coup." But many Palestinians do not view it that way. In January 2006, Hamas decisively won legislative elections, giving it the right to form an administration. The U.S., despite its rhetorical support for democracy, decided to crush Hamas rule, imposing sanctions that have harmed ordinary Palestinians in the hope that Hamas would be forced out. When it won the elections, Hamas had already observed a one-year unilateral truce with Israel, and had suspended the suicide bombings against Israeli civilians that had made it notorious. It tried to enter mainstream politics through the front door, to play by the rules, but was undermined at every step. The bitter conclusion for many Palestinians is that the U.S. is not interested in supporting real democracy, and will intervene relentlessly to overthrow leaders it does not support, regardless of the will of the Palestinian people. The militias that Hamas took on and defeated in recent weeks were particularly hated in Gaza because they had abducted, tortured and killed many Hamas members and were widely seen as thoroughly corrupt. It so happens that these militias received arms and funding from the United States and had vowed to take on and defeat Hamas, overturning the result of the election. We have seen this strategy before. Does anyone remember the Nicaraguan contras? Despite the power-sharing deal Fatah and Hamas signed in Mecca last February, key Fatah leaders refused to place their militias under the control of an independent interior minister. He resigned in frustration, and the U.S. continued to funnel in weapons. Following its dramatic rout of Fatah positions, Hamas leaders gave televised speeches emphasizing that they were not at war with Fatah's rank and file (many of whom did not even fight) and did not want to seize power or overthrow Abbas, whose legitimacy they explicitly reaffirmed. Their problem, they said, was only with the U.S.-supported militia leaders, such as Mohammed Dahlan and Rashid Abu Shbak, who had made the job of the elected Hamas-led government impossible. As a goodwill gesture, Hamas leaders issued a general amnesty for all captured Fatah commanders and appealed for dialogue, reconciliation and reconstructing a national unity government. Abbas rejected these appeals and has opted to form an unelected government and rule by decree even though Palestinian law denies him that authority. This government will have little real power and will be considered illegitimate by a significant part of the Palestinian public. After more than a year of sanctions against the Palestinian people, Hamas is stronger and more popular than ever. Throwing more U.S. support behind Abbas and his unelected Cabinet will not reverse this trend.'

''Hamas acted on a very real fear of a US-sponsored coup
Washington's fingerprints are all over the chaos that has hit Palestinians. The last thing they now need is an envoy called Blair

The Guardian
Did they jump or were they pushed? Was Hamas's seizure of Fatah security offices in Gaza unprovoked, or a pre-emptive strike to forestall a coup by Fatah? After last week's turmoil, it becomes increasingly important to uncover its origins. The fundamental cause is, of course, well known. Israel, aided by the US, was not prepared to accept Hamas's victory in last year's Palestinian elections. Backed by a supine EU, the two governments decided to boycott their new Palestinian counterparts politically and punish Palestinian voters by blocking economic aid. Their policies had a dramatic effect, turning Gaza even more starkly into an open prison and creating human misery on a massive scale. The aim was to turn voters against Hamas - a strategy of stupidity as well as cynicism, since outside pressure usually produces resistance rather than surrender. The policy shocked even moderate western officials like James Wolfensohn, the former World Bank chief, whom the Americans had appointed to help Gaza's economy before the Hamas election victory. "The result was not to build more economic activity but to build more barriers," he said this week while explaining why he resigned in disagreement with US and Israeli strategy. It is also well known that Hamas was as surprised by its election victory as everyone else and that it offered its rival, Fatah, a coalition government of national unity. The offer was refused. If this was done initially out of wounded pride, Fatah's rejection of Hamas's regularly repeated overtures increasingly appeared to be coordinated with Washington as part of the boycott strategy. Reports have been circulating for months of a more sinister side to the boycott. According to them, the US decided last year on a plan to arm and train Mahmoud Abbas's presidential guard in a deliberate effort to confront and defeat Hamas militarily. Israel has already locked up several dozen Hamas legislators and mayors from the West Bank. The next stage was to do the same in Gaza but have Palestinians, rather than Israelis, run the crackdown. Arming insurgents against elected governments has a long US pedigree and it is no accident that Elliott Abrams, the deputy national security adviser and apparent architect of the anti-Hamas subversion, was a key player in Ronald Reagan's supply of weapons to the Contras who fought Nicaragua's elected government in the 1980s. Documents doing the rounds in the Middle East purport to have evidence for Abrams's "hard coup" strategy. One text recounts Washington's objectives as expressed in US officials' conversations with an Arab government. These are, among others, "to maintain President Abbas and Fatah as the centre of gravity on the Palestinian scene", "avoid wasting time in accommodating Hamas's ideological conditions", "undermine Hamas's political status through providing for Palestinian economic needs", and "strengthen the Palestinian president's authority to be able to call and conduct early elections by autumn 2007".'Lees verder: http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,2108926,00.html

'Mohammed Dahlan, the Gaza warlord who has long been Washington’s anointed favorite to play the role of a Palestinian Pinochet. And while Dahlan is formally subordinate to Abbas, whom he supposedly serves as National Security Adviser, nobody believes that Dahlan answers to Abbas — in fact, it was suggested at the time that Abbas appointed Dahlan only under pressure from Washington, which was irked by the Palestinian Authority president’s decision to join a unity government with Hamas. If Dahlan takes orders from anyone at all, it’s certainly not from Abbas. Abbas has long recognized the democratic legitimacy and popularity of Hamas, and embraced the reality that no peace process is possible unless the Islamists are given the place in the Palestinian power structure that their popular support necessitates. He has always favored negotiation and cooperation with Hamas — much to the exasperation of the Bush Administration, and also of the Fatah warlords whose power of patronage was threatened by the Hamas election victory — and could see the logic of the unity government proposed by the Saudis even when Washington couldn’t. Indeed, as the indispensable Robert Malley and Hussein Agha note, nothing has hurt Abbas’s political standing as much as the misguided efforts of Washington to boost his standing in the hope of undermining the elected Hamas government.'

En ook dit verzweeg de NRC:

'The US financed the Palestinian Presidential Forces under control of Mahmoud Abbas with eighty million dollars. Not only that, but the war criminal of US General Keith Dayton also organize the training of these Palestinian troops. And beyond that, the European Union is financing the PA and paying part of the salaries of these troops. The images in the following video, which was released to the Internet some time ago and whose translation I am presenting to the world, will show you the well-trained Fatah-PA troops. The way in which they torture their Palestinian prisoners shows the great achievements of the training given to these PA thugs by the USA. The Palestinian Authority forces seen in the video torturing the prisoners are from the death squads controlled by Mohammad Dahlan. The victims seen in the video are Palestinians, one of the prisoners wears a t-shirt with the legend of the ‘Executive Forces”, a Hamas unit under control of the Interior Ministry. The video is a direct consequence of the foreign policy of the USA and EU. It was subsidized with tax money from all these countries.I am posting the translation of this Video from Gaza under the PA with deep sorrow and bitterness. I felt disgust while translating the horrible dialogues between the Palestinian jailers and their Palestinian victims, which shows the big danger to all Palestinians coming from the PA security system. The video shows some Palestinian prisoners caught by Muhammad Dahlan’s death squads. They are moaning of pain because of the torture inflicted on them, and all the while they are forced to recite denigrating chants for Muhammad Dahlan and Fatah. There is no different between these images of torture by Palestinian jailers and the images of torture by the American occupation for the Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The only difference is that the torture at Abu Ghraib was done by the American occupation, but in Gaza both jailers and prisoners were, and are, Palestinians. I felt shame while translating this video, I even felt shame to be a Palestinian. My shame is not because of my Palestinian roots, but to be identified as a Palestinian and to know that there are monsters capable of such inhuman acts, like Muhammad Dahlan, like the jailers in the video and like the corrupted systems of the PA, who also call themselves Palestinians. I translated the video because I am sure that most foreigners who see the video do not understand the whole story behind it, and I also found some mistakes in the attribution of this video on other websites. I also made this translation to ask the International Community, Governments, the UN General Council and Human Rights organizations to fulfill their duties and end the tragedy unfolding under the forces of the PA and establish an investigative body with the authority to trial and jail the Palestinian criminal Muhammad Dahlan and his troops. I also read that the US government is making pressure on President Abbas to give Dahlan power to control all the PA security systems, ignoring the will of the majority of Palestinians, who want him submitted to a revolutionary trial as a criminal and traitor. I have always criticized the State of Israel, and I will criticize them until the occupation of my homeland Palestine ends, but I never imagined that I would criticize my own people for doing the horrible things which are done to everybody in Israeli jails. I never thought that I would see this kind of thing done by Palestinian jailers. It was not my wish to translate and to post this video, but I am obliged to do so after seeing the level of savagery and to which the conditions in my homeland have deteriorated. The following videoclip shows scenes of real torture, and should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES be watched by minors or by sick or impressionable persons. Discretion is advised before you press on the PLAY button.'
