An Australian human rights activist living in Gaza City says Israel air strikes have killed many innocent people in the Hamas-run territory.

Sharon Lock has described how she sheltered in a basement as Israeli jets pounded what the Israeli military says were Hamas targets.

But Ms Lock says her neighbourhood has been under heavy attack and Israeli jets are not confining their attacks to "legitimate targets".

She described how the explosions started just as children were coming home from school near her apartment building.

"I heard some very loud explosions and I went to my windows and looked out and in several directions I could see smoke rising," she said.

"Down on the street the children were just coming home from the school so they were terrified and the ones from my building were running in crying for their parents."

Ms Lock hid in a basement with a family during some of the attacks.

Earlier in the day the family's mother was killed by a bomb on her way to market.

Ms Lock says some of the missiles narrowly missed their hiding place.

"We heard the loudest explosion yet and we saw flares of fire and it was terrifying for the children," she said.

"Once we felt it was safe to go and check the situation we looked out and there was a huge crater beside the house from a missile dropped by an F-16.

"This was in a residential area. There were houses on all sides, there was nothing that could be described as any sort of legitimate target. And this is happening all over."'
