CIDI Bestuurslid schendt Internationaal Recht 8

'Amnesty International accuses Israel of war crimes in Lebanon
Amnesty International has accused Israel of war crimes in Lebanon, including indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks and the intentional destruction of civilian infrastructure.
"Israel’s assertion that the attacks on the infrastructure were lawful is manifestly wrong. … The evidence strongly suggests that the extensive destruction of power and water plants, as well as the transport infrastructure vital for food and other humanitarian relief, was deliberate and an integral part of a military strategy," said Amnesty's executive deputy secretary-general, Kate Gilmore.
Amnesty International has accused Israel of war crimes in Lebanon, including indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks and the intentional destruction of civilian infrastructure.
"Israel’s assertion that the attacks on the infrastructure were lawful is manifestly wrong. … The evidence strongly suggests that the extensive destruction of power and water plants, as well as the transport infrastructure vital for food and other humanitarian relief, was deliberate and an integral part of a military strategy," said Amnesty's executive deputy secretary-general, Kate Gilmore…
The London-based human rights organization issued a report Wednesday saying both Israel and its Lebanon-based foe, the militant group Hezbollah, have repeatedly committed grave violations of international humanitarian law over many years of conflict.
As in the past, the Israeli government rejected Amnesty's charges.
The report focuses on Israel's latest air and ground campaign in Lebanon, a bid to crush Hezbollah and halt its practice of firing rockets into Israel.

"The widespread destruction of apartments, houses, electricity and water services, roads, bridges, factories and ports, in addition to several statements by Israeli officials, suggests a policy of punishing both the Lebanese government and the civilian population in an effort to get them to turn against Hezbollah," the report said.
"Israeli attacks did not diminish, nor did their pattern appear to change, even when it became clear that the victims of the bombardment were predominantly civilians, which was the case from the first days of the conflict."
In her statement, Gilmore dismissed the idea that Israel targeted Hezbollah positions and support facilities and that other damage to infrastructure was a result of the group using civilians as human shields.
"The pattern, scope and scale of the attacks makes Israel's claim that this was 'collateral damage' simply not credible,” she said.'
Doesn't Hezbollah have anyone else the media can photograph, staat erbij.

Iran 181

'Revealed: Israel plans nuclear strike on Iran
By Uzi Mahnaimi, New York and Sarah Baxter, Washington "The Times" -- - -
ISRAEL has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons. Two Israeli air force squadrons are training to blow up an Iranian facility using low-yield nuclear “bunker-busters”, according to several Israeli military sources. The attack would be the first with nuclear weapons since 1945, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Israeli weapons would each have a force equivalent to one-fifteenth of the Hiroshima bomb. Under the plans, conventional laser-guided bombs would open “tunnels” into the targets. “Mini-nukes” would then immediately be fired into a plant at Natanz, exploding deep underground to reduce the risk of radioactive fallout. “As soon as the green light is given, it will be one mission, one strike and the Iranian nuclear project will be demolished,” said one of the sources. The plans, disclosed to The Sunday Times last week, have been prompted in part by the Israeli intelligence service Mossad’s assessment that Iran is on the verge of producing enough enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons within two years. Israeli military commanders believe conventional strikes may no longer be enough to annihilate increasingly well-defended enrichment facilities. Several have been built beneath at least 70ft of concrete and rock. However, the nuclear-tipped bunker-busters would be used only if a conventional attack was ruled out and if the United States declined to intervene, senior sources said. Israeli and American officials have met several times to consider military action. Military analysts said the disclosure of the plans could be intended to put pressure on Tehran to halt enrichment, cajole America into action or soften up world opinion in advance of an Israeli attack. Some analysts warned that Iranian retaliation for such a strike could range from disruption of oil supplies to the West to terrorist attacks against Jewish targets around the world.'

'JNF Bill
On 18 July 2007, a racist bill entitled the “Jewish National Fund Law”, submitted by MK Uri Ariel (National Unity/National Religious Party), passed its preliminary reading in the Knesset plenum. The bill stipulates that land in the possession of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) is to be allocated exclusively to Jewish people. The majority of the land under the control of the JNF (13% of the land in Israel) was transferred to it by state and was originally in the ownership of Arab refugees or internally displaced persons. The bill was passed by a large majority of 64-16 MKs, with one abstention. In accordance with the bill, a new provision will be added to the Israel Land Administration Law, 1960, entitled “Management of the Jewish National Fund’s Lands.” Under the additional provision, “Despite whatever is stated in any law, leasing of Jewish National Fund’s lands for the purpose of the settlement of Jews on these lands will not be seen as improper discrimination.” Further, “For the purpose of every law, the association documents of the Jewish National Fund will be interpreted according to the judgment of the Jewish National Fund’s founders and from a nationalist-Zionist standpoint”.

ILA Policy of Marketing Tenders Only to Jews for JNF Land
Adalah’s Petition
H.C. 9205/04, Adalah v. The Israel Land Administration, et. al. (case pending).
A petition filed in 10/04 demanding the cancellation of an Israel Land Administration (ILA) policy and a Finance Ministry regulation which effectively permits the marketing and allocation of lands open only to Jewish individuals. Adalah argued that the policy is incompatible with the principle of equality, discriminates against the Palestinian minority on the basis of nationality, and would lead to the further creation of racially-segregated, Jewish-only areas. In its response to the petition and another petition filed against the ILA's policy by ACRI, the JNF declared that its loyalty is only to the Jewish people and not the general public in Israel, and that it operates only for the benefit of Jewish citizens. In October 2004, the JNF committed before the Supreme Court to freeze all current and upcoming tenders for lands in the north of Israel and the Galilee, which remains in place.

Gadish Committee
The Gadish Committee was established by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor in May 2004 to investigate reform in the Israel Land Administration. The committee proposed an exchange of state-held land in the Galilee and the Naqab for land of equal value held by the JNF in the center of the state, which would exacerbate the discrimination faced by Arab citizens in accessing land and violate their basic rights. Since the Arab minority of Israel lives primarily in the Galilee and the Naqab regions, if implemented, the recommendations of the Gadish Committee would be particularly harmful to them. In June 2005, the government accepted the committee’s recommendations, although no agreement has been signed between the state and the JNF to date.

Ik ontving deze week deze uitnodiging:

Zie: http://www.happychaos.nl/

En dat kon ook niet omdat - in de woorden van Shlomo Ben-Ami de Oslo Akkoorden: ‘were founded on a new colonialist basis, on a life of dependence of one on the other, forever.’

Zie: http://www.cidi.nl/media/1999/niw.210599.html

Rare krant.

Mijn dochter leest NRC.Next.

Gepubliceerd: 7 november 2007 15:13 Gewijzigd: 7 november 2007 15:47
Door onze financiële redactie

Amsterdam, 7 nov.

'Why do we want foreign investment in the U.S. dollar?

When we say that foreigners invest in the dollar, we mean they are buying U.S. Treasury securities, corporate stocks and bonds, mortgage-backed bonds -- everything for sale on U.S. markets. Foreign investment helps fuel the growth of those markets.
In the 1990s, the bulk of foreign investment went into U.S. stocks and corporate acquisitions. Nowadays, most investment from abroad comes from central banks -- the central banks of China and Japan, in particular -- and most of that money is going into U.S. Treasury securities.
Investing in U.S. Treasury securities is less risky for central banks than putting their money in corporate stocks and bonds. Foreign central banks are also less inclined to take an ownership stake in U.S. companies, Zandi says, adding: "Can you imagine if the Chinese central bank owned a big chunk of GM?"'

"Paper Coup"

By Naomi Wolf

I have argued that in the closing stages of a `fascist shift', events cascade. I am hearing about them, even across the globe. Here in Australia I hear from the nation's best-know feminist activist, and former adviser to Paul Keating, Anne Summers, who was also at the time this took place Chair of the Board of Greenpeace International. Summers was detained by armed agents for FIVE HOURS each way in LAX on her way to and from the annual meeting of the board of Greenpeace International in Mexico, and her green card was taken away from her. `I want to call a lawyer', she told TSA agents. `Ma'am, you do not have a right to call an attorney,' they replied. `You have not entered the United States.'
Apparently a section of LAX just beyond the security line is asserted to be `not in the United States' -- though it is squarely inside the airport -- so the laws of the US do not apply. (This assertion, by the way, should alarm any US citizen who is aware of how the White House argued that Guantanamo is not `in the United States' - is a legal no-man's land -- so the laws of the US do not apply.) Toward the end of her second five-hour detention she asked, `Why am I being detained?' `Lady, this is not detention,' the TSA agent told her. `Detention is when I take you to the cells out back and lock you up.'
Last week in Boston, while attending Bioneers by the Bay, I heard that one of the speakers for our event, an environmentalist named Gunter Pauli, was going to miss the time of his scheduled speech; he had been physically taken OFF THE PLANE by TSA agents and had to take a much later flight. More chillingly, the camerawoman doing my interview said that another well-known environmental writer found that his girlfriend was effectively `disappeared' for three days as she sought to enter the US from Canada. Lisa Fithian, an anti-globalization activist, was denied entry across the Canadian border in 2001 and was offered the choice of turning back or being arrested.
A friend emails me a story from USA Today about a 24-year-old college graduate who testified before Congress about her family of immigrants and the difficulties they face; shortly afterward, the entire family was arrested by immigration agents. Another online piece reports that Blackwater is setting up operations along the US/Mexico border and an insightful post on Daily Kos describes how the TSA list will revert from the airlines to the management of the Department of Homeland Security shortly and that by February we may well face the need to apply to the State for permission to travel. If this proposed regulation goes through, we will move from 1931 to about 1934--when the borders started to close-- with the stroke of a pen. Jews in America have hardwired into their DNA a sense of the distinction between those who got out before the borders closed and those who waited a moment too long.'

'Warning... this film could make you angry
By Robert Fisk

At university, we male students used to say that it was impossible to take a beautiful young woman to the cinema and concentrate on the film. But in Canada, I've at last proved this to be untrue. Familiar with the Middle East and its abuses – and with the vicious policies of George Bush – we both sat absorbed by Rendition, Gavin Hood's powerful, appalling testimony of the torture of a "terrorist suspect" in an unidentified Arab capital after he was shipped there by CIA thugs in Washington. Why did an Arab "terrorist" telephone an Egyptian chemical engineer – holder of a green card and living in Chicago with a pregnant American wife while he was attending an international conference in Johannesburg? Did he have knowledge of how to make bombs? (Unfortunately, yes – he was a chemical engineer – but the phone calls were mistakenly made to his number.)He steps off his plane at Dulles International Airport and is immediately shipped off on a CIA jet to what looks suspiciously like Morocco – where, of course, the local cops don't pussyfoot about Queensberry rules during interrogation. A CIA operative from the local US embassy – played by a nervous Jake Gyllenhaal – has to witness the captive's torture while his wife pleads with congressmen in Washington to find him.The Arab interrogator – who starts with muttered questions to the naked Egyptian in an underground prison – works his way up from beatings to a "black hole", to the notorious "waterboarding" and then to electricity charges through the captive's body. The senior Muhabarat questioner is, in fact, played by an Israeli and was so good that when he demanded to know how the al-Jazeera channel got exclusive footage of a suicide bombing before his own cops, my companion and I burst into laughter.Well, suffice it to say that the CIA guy turns soft, rightly believes the Egyptian is innocent, forces his release by the local minister of interior, while the senior interrogator loses his daughter in the suicide bombing – there is a mind-numbing reversal of time sequences so that the bomb explodes both at the start and at the end of the film – while Meryl Streep as the catty, uncaring CIA boss is exposed for her wrong-doing. Not very realistic?Well, think again. For in Canada lives Maher Arar, a totally harmless software engineer – originally from Damascus – who was picked up at JFK airport in New York and underwent an almost identical "rendition" to the fictional Egyptian in the movie. Suspected of being a member of al-Qa'ida – the Canadian Mounties had a hand in passing on this nonsense to the FBI – he was put on a CIA plane to Syria where he was held in an underground prison and tortured. The Canadian government later awarded Arar $10m in compensation and he received a public apology from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.'

'French President Accused of Working for Israeli Intelligence
Furl the flag
By Gamal Nkrumah

As if his marital challenges were not enough cause for concern, "Sarco the Sayan" has suddenly emerged as the most infamous accolade of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The influential French daily Le Figaro last week revealed that the French leader once worked for -- and perhaps still does, it hinted -- Israeli intelligence as a sayan (Hebrew for helper), one of the thousands of Jewish citizens of countries other than Israel who cooperate with the katsas (Mossad case-officers).A letter dispatched to French police officials late last winter -- long before the presidential election but somehow kept secret -- revealed that Sarkozy was recruited as an Israeli spy. The French police is currently investigating documents concerning Sarkozy's alleged espionage activities on behalf of Mossad, which Le Figaro claims dated as far back as 1983. According to the author of the message, in 1978, Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin ordered the infiltration of the French ruling Gaullist Party, Union pour un Mouvement Populaire. Originally targeted were Patrick Balkany, Patrick Devedjian and Pierre Lellouche. In 1983, they recruited the "young and promising" Sarkozy, the "fourth man". Ex-Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky describes how sayanim function in By Way Of Deception: The Making and Unmaking of a Mossad Officer. They are usually reached through relatives in Israel. An Israeli with a relative in France, for instance, might be asked to draft a letter saying the person bearing the letter represents an organisation whose main goal is to help save Jewish people in the Diaspora. Could the French relative help in any way? They perform many different roles. A car sayan, for example, running a rental car agency, could help the Mossad rent a car without having to complete the usual documentation. An apartment sayan would find accommodation without raising suspicions, a bank sayan could fund someone in the middle of the night if needs be, a doctor sayan would treat a bullet wound without reporting it to the police.'

Pakistan

'Pakistan shakes off US shackles
By M K Bhadrakumar

The pervasive impression is that the impending judgement by the Supreme Court regarding the propriety of President General Pervez Musharraf's re-election as president of Pakistan for another term prompted the timing of his decision to impose emergency rule last week. The temptation to view the developments in Pakistan through the prism of democracy is almost irresistible. But democracy is not even a sub-theme in the current world of realpolitik in Pakistan. At best it forms a miniscule part of the story. What emerges beyond doubt is that Musharraf's move enjoys the support of the top brass of the Pakistan armed forces. Significantly, he signed the proclamation on emergency rule in his capacity as the chief of army staff rather than as the president. He has thereby signaled that the Pakistan armed forces as a whole are backing his move. It is on occasions such as this that the incomprehensible alchemy of the US-Pakistan relationship fleetingly surfaces. Clearly, it stands to reason that Musharraf took care to consult Washington and Britain before announcing his move. But what was the nature of these consultations? Musharraf spoke to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Thursday, hardly hours prior to the proclamation of emergency rule. Britain was the prime mover of the Musharraf-Benazir Bhutto rapprochement. Musharraf kept in view the need to assuage British feelings. Equally, Admiral William Fallon, commander of the US Central Command, was on a visit to Pakistan, and he actually happened to be in the general headquarters of the Pakistan armed forces in Rawalpindi when Musharraf was giving the final touches to his proclamation on emergency rule. The political symbolism was unmistakable. US reluctantly acquiesces Fallon did his best to "dissuade" Musharraf from going ahead with his plan, but had to ultimately give in. Fallon apparently warned Musharraf that future American aid for his beleaguered regime might be in jeopardy if the US Congress took a negative view of the rollback of civil liberties in Pakistan. If so, it is obvious that Fallon failed to impress the tough Pakistani top brass. Equally, Musharraf estimated Washington has no choice but to support his regime for the foreseeable future. This wouldn't be the first time that the generals in Rawalpindi have done their homework as regards their corporate interests and proceeded to set aside Washington's unsolicited counsel. Time and again in Pakistan's history it has appeared that the unequal relationship between the US and Pakistan is far from a one-dimensional tie-up. It would be a mistake to regard Pakistan as a mindless American proxy - which is part of the reason why China and Russia have an abiding interest in that country.'

Het Neoliberale Geloof 58

'Stock Market Mayhem and Bush’s Moral Swamp

By Mike Whitney

“It’s scary out there---there’s blood on the streets” anonymous Wall Street trader

Last Wednesday, the Federal Reserve dropped its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.5% citing ongoing weakness in the housing sector. As expected, the stock market rallied and the Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 137 points. Unfortunately, Bernanke’s “low interest” stardust wasn’t enough to buoy the markets through the rest of the week.

On Thursday, the hammer fell. The Dow plummeted 362 points in one afternoon on increasing fears of inflation, a slowdown in consumer spending, a steadily weakening dollar and persistent problems in the credit markets. By day’s end, the Fed was forced to dump another $41 into the banking system to forestall a major breakdown. This is the most money the Fed has pumped into the financial system since 9-11 and it shows how dire the situation really is.

Why do the banks need such a massive infusion of credit if they are as “rock solid” as Bernanke says?

As most people now realize, the mortgage industry is on life-support. Many of the ways that the banks were generating profits have vanished overnight. The “securitization” of debt (mortgages, car loans, credit card debt etc) has ground to a halt. What had been a booming multi-billion dollar per-year business is now a dwindling part of the banks’ revenues. Investors are steering clear of anything even remotely associated to real estate.

Additionally, the banks are holding an estimated $200 billion in mortgage-backed securities and derivatives for which there is currently no market. This is compounded by $350 billion in “off balance sheets” operations---which are collateralized with dodgy long-term mortgage-backed securities---that provide funding for “short-term” asset-backed commercial paper. ASCP has shriveled by $275 billion in the last 10 weeks leaving the banks with gargantuan liabilities. Bernanke was forced to add $41 billion to keep the banking system from slipping beneath the salty brine.

This shows how powerless the Fed really is when it comes to changing the overall direction of the markets. Sure, Bernanke and his buddies in the Plunge Protection Team can goose the market by buying-up futures and boosting the day’s results. But that’s just a short-term fix. In the long run, the Fed has less chance of stopping the market from correcting than it does of stopping a runaway truck by standing in its path. Besides, the Fed cannot purchase the banks bad investments (CDOs, MBSs, or CP) nor can it reflate the multi-trillion dollar the housing bubble. All it can do is provide more cheap credit and hope the problems go away.'

The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget

With the media subdued, governments have not been held to account for the biggest political calamity of our time
By Madeleine Bunting"The Guardian"

'You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we choose to forget, choose not to understand; and how from such choices it becomes possible to imagine our innocence. That's not to say that her own moral choices were defensible - she blew up herself, her beloved brother, fellow Muslims and plenty of women in the crowd - but the challenge even from such a morally flawed character persists. Can we claim innocence of the chaotic violence of Iraq now normalised into the background of our lives? Suicide bombs have long since become routine radio noise. We're numbed to the atrocities; except for some stalwarts, the initial anti-war activism has been crowded out by other responsibilities. Life goes on, even if in Baghdad it frequently doesn't.And to accompany the indifference is the creeping denial of responsibility. Government ministers now talk of Iraq as a tragedy, as if it was a natural disaster and they had no hand in its making. There's a public revulsion at the violent sectarian struggles best summed up as "a plague on all their houses", as even the horror gives way to exhaustion. The irony is that in this great age of communications and saturation media, this is perhaps the most important war to become nigh on impossible to report. Unless the reporter is embedded with the occupation forces, it takes either terrifying courage or extraordinary ingenuity to bring images to our screens of those caught up in the awful maelstrom of this imploded country. Without the human stories that bring people and their suffering so vividly to life, there is little chance of public opinion re-engaging with the biggest political calamity of our time. The Iraq war represents the end of the media as a major actor in war. In Bosnia journalists stirred western Europe's conscience with their vivid accounts; these were people we came to understand, recognise and empathise with, and public opinion forced recalcitrant governments to take note and act. It was a lesson not lost on the Kosovans: they ensured the media saw every atrocity, and the coverage was used to secure a comparable outcome to Bosnia - western governments were forced to act. But in Iraq the number of journalists killed (now at least 138) means that this war is near private - the images and people who might make the horror of this war real don't reach our screens. It's no longer a war that is accessible to public scrutiny or to democratic engagement.'

CIDI Bestuurslid schendt Internationaal Recht 7

'Dutch "research" group covers for Israeli crimes, violations

Stan van Houcke,

The Electronic Intifada, 5 November 2007

Doron Livnat is co-owner of Riwal, a Dutch company involved in the illegal construction of the separation Wall in occupied Palestinian territory. In 2004 the Wall was confirmed by the International Court of Justice as being in violation of international law. Livnat is also a member of the board of the Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI), a pro-Zionist political lobby group based in Amsterdam.CIDI does not seem to have a problem with the judgment of the International Court of Justice, nor Livnat's company's involvement in this illegal activity. And yet CIDI still has the audacity to condemn United Civilians for Peace (UCP), a broad-based Dutch human rights platform. In a recent "research" report containing wild allegations, CIDI shamelessly attempted to smear the organization for daring to call for dialogue and to present a perspective critical of Israel, calling for an end to its subsidy. As Haaretz itself misleadingly reported on 26 October 2007:
The Dutch government is funding an anti-Israeli organization whose speakers advocate Iran's right to possess nuclear weapons, a Hague-based pro-Zionist lobby group stated Thursday in a report that it sent to the Netherlands foreign ministry. The scathing report that the Center for Information and Documentation Israel (CIDI) prepared of United Civilians for Peace (UCP) was written by Yonatan Bar-On, a Dutch-born historian from the Haifa area. After reading the report, parliament member Hans van Baalen from the second largest opposition party, the VVD, reportedly wrote Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen a letter demanding the government cease funding for the organization. According to Bar-On's report, the government gives UCP 500,000 euros annually."UCP is one-sided and biased," Bar-On told Haaretz. "By saying that the Netherlands should engage in dialogue 'with all parties,' it is calling for speaking to Hamas, which runs contrary to the Hague's foreign policy. And that would have been fine, if it weren't for the fact that the Dutch government is paying for this group's actions." Bar-On said UCP had confirmed to him that it receives half a million euros per annum from the government. [1]What the Haaretz article did not mention is that UCP had already reacted to CIDI'S report the day before:
In a recent report by the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI), United Civilians for Peace (UCP) were accused of being a one-sided political group against Israel, polarizing the public debate. UCP wishes to make clear that the accusations contained in this report are false, based on wrong and misleading information. ... UCP recognizes the basic rights of both people and calls upon a solution that is consistent with international law. Only a solution on the basis of international law can lead to peace, respect for human rights and sustainable development. [2]At least Haaretz got something right, referring to CIDI as a "pro-Zionist lobby group," something that is never referred to by the Dutch newspapers. In light of its overtly political role, it is remarkable that CIDI can get away with calling itself an "information and documentation center" and that this Zionist lobby group can be considered by the commercial media in the Netherlands as an independent source of information.Particularly notable by this Zionist lobby group is that a call for dialogue (with the democratically-elected party Hamas) is considered to be criminal. CIDI's condemnation of UCP's call for a dialogue amongst all parties, while simultaneously condoning Israel's ongoing and illegal theft and annexation of Palestinian land exposes even more hypocrisy. In the Netherlands, as elsewhere in Europe, a call for dialogue amongst all parties in conflict would ordinarily be considered to be a normal phenomenon. In the case of Israel, however, it's somehow different. Indeed, CIDI considers such a call to be "inflammatory."'

Tony Blair 8

'Revealed: how Blair rejected Bush's offer to stay
By Andrew Grice, Political Editor

Tony Blair turned down a last-minute offer from President George Bush for Britain to stay out of the Iraq war because he thought it would look "pathetic", according to a new book on Mr Blair's tenure.
Mr Bush was warned by the US embassy in London before the crucial Commons vote on the war that the Blair government could be brought down. He was so worried that he picked up the telephone and personally offered the then Prime Minister a surprise opt-out.
Mr Bush's move is revealed in the book Blair Unbound, by Anthony Seldon, Peter Snowdon and Daniel Collings, to be published by Simon & Schuster next Monday. It is bound to heighten criticism of Mr Blair's stance on Iraq.
Nine days before the Commons backed military action, despite a rebellion by 139 Labour MPs, President Bush astonished Condoleezza Rice, who was his National Security Adviser, by suggesting that Britain need not join the invasion and could play a less controversial role during the aftermath.
According to the book, the US embassy in London was sending Washington worrying accounts of Mr Blair's position. "We were talking to backbenchers. What we heard was a fairly strident message that there was only so far that we could go, and the UN was extremely important. We heard some very ominous analyses of what could happen," said one official.
Ms Rice told the book's authors: "I remember standing in the Oval Office, and the President said, 'We can't have the British Government fall because of this decision over war.' I said: 'So what are you saying?' He said, 'I have to tell Tony that he doesn't have to do this.'"
Ms Rice's first thought was to call Sir David Manning, her opposite number in Downing Street, to prepare the ground but Mr Bush judged there was no time. "I'm going to call him right now," he said.
"What I want to say to you is that my last choice is to have your government go down," he told Mr Blair. "We don't want that to happen under any circumstances. I really mean that."
If it would help, he would let Mr Blair "drop out of the coalition" and the US would find some other way for Britain to participate. Ms Rice described the conversation as "very emotional" for the President.'

Hamas 2

'Hamas Warns: Abbas is a Traitor
by Hillel Fendel

Abu Obieda further states that Abu Mazen's talks with Israel are designed to "stick a knife in the back of the Palestinian people and harm their resistance... They are therefore considered acts of treachery and treason against the Palestinian people."
The statement represents a frontal attack against Mahmoud Abbas and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority he runs - and a warning to those counting on the upcoming U.S.-sponsored Annapolis Mideast summit. The Hamas terror organization, which currently governs the Gaza Strip that was evacuated two years ago by Israel, claims that Abbas has the status of "traitor to his people" for his continued contacts with Israel.

With preparations firmly underway for Annapolis where PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) is expected to sign an agreement with Israel, Hamas has all but issued a death decree against him.
The official website of Izz A-Din Al-Kassam Brigades of Hamas quotes its official spokesman Abu Obieda as saying, "Abbas is an enemy of the Palestinian nation."
Abu Obieda says the ongoing meetings between Abu Mazen and the Zionist entity which "carried out acts of slaughter", even as the "Zionist attacks continue against the Palestinian people continue," are proof that "Abbas and the people around him are not concerned with the suffering of the Palestinian people." Abu Obieda calls the meetings "a waste of time, that do not obligate the Palestinian people."

'U.S. to face "quagmire" if attacks Iran: commander

TEHRAN (Reuters) - The United States or its allies would find themselves trapped in a "quagmire deeper than Iraq and Afghanistan" if it chose to attack the Islamic Republic, Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander said on Wednesday.
The United States has not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to end a row over Iran' nuclear ambitions, which Washington says is aimed at building atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.
"If the enemies show inexperience and want to invade Islamic Iran, they will receive a strong slap from Iran," the Guards commander-in-chief, Mohammad Ali Jafari, said in comments carried by the semi-official Fars News Agency.
"The enemy knows that if it attacks Iran it will be trapped in a quagmire deeper than Iraq and Afghanistan, and they will have to withdraw in defeat," he said, without mentioning the United States by name.
The Revolutionary Guards are an ideologically driven force that has a separate command structure to the regular Iranian military, answering directly to the Islamic Republic's top authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Guards commanders have previously warned that their forces could disrupt the vital oil shipping lanes of the Gulf waterway if pushed but have also said U.S. forces are too bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan to open a new front.'

Soldiers Return, but for Families, Iraq Battlefields Are Not Far Off By Lisa W. Foderaro The New York Times
Fort Drum, New York - The last time Bobbi Plautz welcomed home her husband, Travis, from Iraq, he was a changed person. He listened to different kinds of music and craved different kinds of food. He stayed up all night and wrestled with nightmares.
"He came home and had a 5-month-old baby and was overwhelmed," Mrs. Plautz said of her husband, a staff sergeant with the 10th Mountain Division. "But he slowly got back to being the guy I married: funny, playing practical jokes."
As she waited in a gymnasium close to midnight with her son, Zander, now 3, and scores of other families bearing balloons and signs, Mrs. Plautz was preparing herself for another period of readjustment.
Hours earlier, the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division's Second Brigade had spilled off a jet at a nearby airfield, some bending down to kiss the ground, others whooping into the cold night air. But despite the joyous homecoming, the 120 soldiers who landed Thursday evening - a fraction of the 3,500 Second Brigade soldiers returning to this sprawling military base this fall - were about to take on a new and uncertain challenge: the return to normalcy.
Coming home from war is always fraught. But for these soldiers, it is all the more so because of the length of their deployment, which was extended midtour from one year to 15 months. For almost half the soldiers, it was at least their second tour, which meant some had missed the birth of a child or been apart from spouses for most of their young marriages.
As the soldiers stepped off the plane, they carried, along with their oversized packs and M-4 rifles, a good deal of emotional baggage: the division reported that 52 members of their brigade were killed on this tour; two are still missing. The extension of their tours was especially hard.
"That was pretty catastrophic for them," said Maj. Gen. Michael Oates, the commander of the 10th Mountain Division, after greeting the men and women on the airfield.
Given the length of this tour - the Army deploys its members longer than any other military branch in Iraq - as well as the round-the-clock stress the troops endured, many family members were clearly on edge as they anticipated the soldiers' return to domestic life.
Samantha Wilmet, 23, held her 9-month-old baby, Jasmine, clad in a pink shirt that read, "I'm here to pick up my Daddy," and wondered how her husband's first tour had affected him.
"I'm not sure what he went through," Mrs. Wilmet said of her husband, Specialist David Wilmet. "My husband is a closed-mouth kind of guy. I know he's had a hard time. I had plenty of friends say it's going to change him, it's going to change him. I wonder: Will it or won't it?"'

From the Desk of Donald Rumsfeld ... By Robin Wright The Washington Post
In sometimes-brusque "snowflakes," he shared worldview, shaped policy.
In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued that Muslims avoid "physical labor" and wrote of the need to "keep elevating the threat," "link Iraq to Iran" and develop "bumper sticker statements" to rally public support for an increasingly unpopular war.
The memos, often referred to as "snowflakes," shed light on Rumsfeld's brusque management style and on his efforts to address key challenges during his tenure as Pentagon chief. Spanning from 2002 to shortly after his resignation following the 2006 congressional elections, a sampling of his trademark missives obtained yesterday reveals a defense secretary disdainful of media criticism and driven to reshape public opinion of the Iraq war.
Rumsfeld, whose sometimes abrasive approach often alienated other Cabinet members and White House staff members, produced 20 to 60 snowflakes a day and regularly poured out his thoughts in writing as the basis for developing policy, aides said. The memos are not classified but are marked "for official use only."
In a 2004 memo on the deteriorating situation in Iraq, Rumsfeld concluded that the challenges there are "not unusual." Pessimistic news reports - "our publics risk falling prey to the argument that all is lost" - simply result from the wrong standards being applied, he wrote in one of the memos obtained by The Washington Post.
Under siege in April 2006, when a series of retired generals denounced him and called for his resignation in newspaper op-ed pieces, Rumsfeld produced a memo after a conference call with military analysts. "Talk about Somalia, the Philippines, etc. Make the American people realize they are surrounded in the world by violent extremists," he wrote.
People will "rally" to sacrifice, he noted after the meeting. "They are looking for leadership. Sacrifice = Victory."
The meeting also led Rumsfeld to write that he needed a team to help him "go out and push people back, rather than simply defending" Iraq policy and strategy. "I am always on the defense. They say I do it well, but you can't win on the defense," he wrote. "We can't just keep taking hits."'

'Turks Demand Action, Not Words
By Matthew Schofield
McClatchy Newspapers

Ankara, Turkey - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday branded the Kurdistan Workers' Party a "terrorist organization" and a "common enemy" of the United States, Turkey and Iraq, but she stopped short of committing Washington to military action against the guerrilla force.
Turkey has threatened to launch military operations against the group in Iraq alone if necessary, and Turkish officials indicated that they weren't satisfied by what Rice told them in talks Friday.
"This is where the words end, and the action needs to start," Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said. "Her words were good to hear, but words offer nothing new," said another government official, who requested anonymity because he isn't an authorized spokesman.
The Bush administration has assured Turkey at least four times that it would take action against the PKK, as it's known in its Kurdish initials, but hasn't done so, in part because there are no U.S. troops in Iraq available for such a mission.
Rice's talks in the Turkish capital with President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Babacan opened a four-day period of consultations that will culminate Monday with a meeting in Washington between Erdogan and President Bush. Erdogan has said he'll decide on Turkey's actions after the meeting.
In the past month, PKK fighters operating out of northern Iraq have killed 30 Turkish soldiers and captured eight. The Turkish parliament has authorized military intervention, and the army has been in a heightened state of alert, with some 100,000 troops on the Iraqi border. State flags are on display throughout the country, and tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets calling for war against the PKK.
Rice's words were the strongest yet from the United States in the growing crisis over the PKK, which the European Union and the U.S. classify as a terrorist group. "Turkey, the United States and Iraq have a common enemy in the PKK. We have branded the PKK as a terrorist organization," she said after her talks.
She said she'd delivered a tough message to officials of the Kurdish Regional Government, which has control over the border area with Turkey.'
