Amerikaanse Oorlogsmisdaden 28

'Ex-G.I.'s onthullen de Amerikaanse wreedheden in Vietnam.
by John Kifner vertaling A. Schmidt
29-12-03 The New York Times

English version Stichting Visie
permanent in angst, altijd verkrampt, zulke dingen gebeuren."
schreef The Blade.
eenheid was.
Lees verder: http://www.xs4all.nl/~stgvisie/VISIE/Vietnamoorlog&USwarcrimes.html

Times on Line bericht:
'US troops 'raped mother and killed family in Iraq.'

The American army in Iraq suffered a fresh blow to its image today as it emerged that five soldiers were being investigated for allegedly raping a woman and then murdering her and three members of her family.

The soldiers are accused of burning their alleged victim's body, according to sources quoted by the AP news agency.
Major General James Thurman, commander of coalition troops in Baghdad, has ordered a criminal investigation into the alleged killing of the family of four in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, in March.
"The entire investigation will encompass everything that could have happened that evening. We’re not releasing any specifics of an ongoing investigation," said military spokesman Major Todd Breasseale.
"There is no indication what led soldiers to this home. The investigation just cracked open. We’re just beginning to dig into the details."
A US official close to the investigation said that at least one of the soldiers, all assigned to the 502nd Infantry Regiment, has admitted his role in the attack and been arrested.
It is believed that one of the soldiers has already been discharged and returned to the United States. The others have had their weapons taken away and are confined to Forward Operating Base Mahmoudiyah south of Baghdad.
Two soldiers from the same regiment were killed this month when they were kidnapped at a checkpoint near Youssifiyah.
The official said the killings appear to be unrelated to the kidnappings. He said those involved were all below the rank of sergeant.
He said senior officers were aware of the family’s death but believed it was due to sectarian violence, common in the religiously mixed town.
The killings appeared to have been a "crime of opportunity," the official said. The soldiers had not been attacked by insurgents but had noticed the woman on previous patrols.' Lees verder:

Norman Finkelstein: A Debate on Israel's Assault on Gaza.

AMY GOODMAN: As we continue our coverage, we're joined now by two guests. Here in our Firehouse studio, Norman Finkelstein, Professor of Political Science at DePaul University in Chicago. His latest book is called Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History. And on the telephone, we're joined by Josh Block, Director of Media Affairs for AIPAC -- that’s the American Israel Public Affairs Committee -- speaking to us on the line from Connecticut. Josh Block, let’s begin with you. Your response and the latest, the last thing that Chris McGreal said, saying human rights groups, the Palestinian leadership, Mahmoud Abbas talking about this as collective punishment and a crime against humanity.
JOSH BLOCK: Well, clearly the concern is the reaction from those same folks when it comes to the murder and kidnap of Israeli citizens. From many perspective, American or otherwise, an attack inside Israel, unprovoked, that resulted in the murder of two Israelis and not the capture, Amy, but the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier is, in and of itself, an act of war.
And clearly the Israelis tried for several days, 48 hours, 36 hours, of intense diplomacy with the aid of the United States, the French -- and I should add that this young man who has been kidnapped is also a French citizen -- to secure the release from Hamas, the terrorist group that has him. And by the way, in high irony, the government of the Palestinian Authority, run by the same terrorist group, so a government that's charged with fighting terrorism is itself a terrorist group that's responsible for his kidnapping. So after 48 hours and 36 hours of difficult and unproductive diplomacy, clearly the Israelis felt that they needed to act in their own defense.
And I think the question is what is the reaction from these same human rights groups when it comes to the condemnation of terrorism or other acts? And clearly -- and I don't speak for the Israelis, but they must have felt that this was an important thing to do to help isolate and prevent the movement of this terrorist groups from moving the captive or kidnapped Israeli soldier around the Gaza Strip.
AMY GOODMAN: Professor Finkelstein?
NORMAN FINKELSTEIN: I think it is useful to begin with what the human rights groups have to say about this. Let's leave aside the background for a moment and look narrowly at the incident that triggered the Israeli invasion. Let's see what Hamas did not do, what the Palestinian militants did not do. Number one, they did not liquidate the corporal, which Israel routinely does, namely its political assassinations. That's a war crime under international law. Israel routinely does that. Hamas did not do that to the corporal.
Number two, they didn't kill the corporal while trying to arrest him. Israel routinely does that. If you look at July 2005, B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, they put out a very hefty report entitled "Take No Prisoners." And the report shows Israel routinely, during so-called arrest operations, kills Palestinians, documents a case of a Palestinian who was wounded, on the ground, no weapon. Israel killed him. Hamas didn't do that to the corporal.
It said by this – by [inaudible], it said that they took him hostage, they kidnapped him. Okay. Israel routinely takes Palestinians, Lebanese hostage. In fact, Israel was the only country in the world, in 1997, which legalized hostage-taking. The liberal head of the Israeli High Court, Aharon Barak, he said it's legal, legitimate, under international law to take what he called bargaining chips in order to get prisoners, Israeli prisoners being held by the Lebanese. The decision was reversed in 2000, but Israel continued to hold Lebanese hostages until 2004. So, at worst, Hamas is being accused of what Israel legalized and routinely does.
And finally, let's talk about those 9,000 Palestinians who are effectively hostages being held by Israel. 1,000 of them are administrative detainees.
AMY GOODMAN: You're talking about prisoners.
NORMAN FINKELSTEIN: Yes. Administrative detainees who are being held without any charges or trial. And the other 8,000 are being held after military courts have convicted them, almost always on the basis of confessions which were extracted by torture. So if we're going to look simply at the numbers, we have one hostage on the Palestinian side, and effectively we have about 9,000 on the Israeli side.' Lees verder:

De Israelische Terreur 57

Ik kreg deze email net: 'Urgent Appeal.

Immediate Action Needed in BEIT JALA City – Bethlehem District – Palestine.

This is an urgent appeal from the Municipal Council of Beit Jala city on behalf of the citizens of Beit Jala and its organizations to our friends and peace loving people around the world, asking them to help us to protest the continuous illegal act facing the Palestinian Community in Beit Jala city, caused by the construction of the segregation Wall.

This morning Tuesday 27th of June 2006, the Israeli bulldozers guarded with armed personnel started cutting and uprooting olive trees in the Cremisan area in preparation for the construction of the segregation Wall. Cremisan area has the only remaining forest in the city, and the most fertilized agricultural land, which is the main source of income to many farmers in the city. Cremisan area is also one of the very few recreational sites in the city where many citizens used to go during weekends or holidays. In addition, the area hosts the only winery in Palestine, two monasteries and a kindergarten.

Constructing the segregation Wall in this area will separate the city and its citizens from its northern part, slaying all our fertile agricultural lands, depriving the right of our citizens to use their lands and deprives any possibility for the city from future expansion.

The Segregation Wall will severely affect us directly or indirectly and cause destruction to our private and public properties. The Wall will swallow the left open spaces and strangulate the built-up areas where we live.

The Wall is a collective punishment and a human right violation, Israel through its construction opposes the peace objectives, the International laws and UN resolutions and the will of the International community to give peace and stability in the region.

Therefore, we ask the peace loving people of the world, and the International community to immediately interfere and stop these Israeli activities in Beit Jala city, that has suffered a lot from land confiscation, leaving the city with only 4500 dunums from original 14500 dunums.

Zie:

De Israelische Terreur 55

Dit is Name:Laila El-Haddad. Location:Gaza City, Occupied Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territory
Journalist, mom, occupied Palestinian-all packed into one.
In process of packing and moving down to North Carolina on Thursday...and writing some columns and lengthier post on the situation back home...but for now...just a brief post:Friends and family in Gaza have told me they are bracing themselves for the worst, while praying for the best. In Rafah, the refugee camp that has not been spared the wrath of the Israeli Army on so many occasions in the past, where 16, 000 Palestinians lost their homes to armoured bulldozers, families have holed themselves indoors, fearing for their lives. Israel has taken control of the border area, including Rafah Crossing, and the Airport. Colleague, friend, and activist Fida Qishta with whom I toured the northeast US is on her way to Egypt, where she will have to remain until she will be allowed to enter her home in Gaza in Rafah by Israeli forces, who have sealed off the Gaza Strip in its entirety. I was worried about her safety, since she is from Rafah, but I received a frantic telephone call from her in London airport where her flight was delayed, and where is making plans to remain exiled in Egypt. Meanwhile, journalist colleagues have told me that CNN and BBC crews from Jerusalem were also not allowed through the Erez Crossing into Gaza yesterday.UPDATE: Israeli F-16s bombed Gaza's main bridge, right next to my father's farm, between northern and southern Gaza. They have also destroyed Gaza's ONLY power plant, and electricity in most of Gaza has been cut off as a result. I've just spoken to my grandmother in Khan Yunis, who confirmed the entire Strip has plunged into darkness, with people stocking up on food and supplies. The electricity of course has also been cut off in hospitals and clincs, though I'm not sure how long the generators can last. Friends in Gaza City also tell us that terrorizing sonic boom attacks have resumed, stronger than before, full force, by low-flying jets breaking the sound barrier throughout the night over the civlian population-illegal in Israel, the united States, and most all of the world.FYI I have re-enabled comment moderation due to spamming of the comment section.'

Daarover later.

Zie: http://www.palestinercs.org/scenes_from_the_conflict.htm

Het Ierse parlementslid Aengus Ó Snodaigh verklaarde onlangs het volgende:
'According to the UN Secretary General for Political Affairs, in the month prior to the capture of the Israeli soldier by Palestinians at least 49 Palestinians, including 11 children, were killed by Israeli forces and 259 injured. A ground assault on Gaza began yesterday involving tanks, bulldozers, thousands of troops undercover of air fire and the demolition of key pieces of civilian infrastructure including bridges and Gaza's electric power plant. The bombardment of civilian infrastructure amounts to collective punishment and a crime against humanity and the abduction and imprisonment by Israel of some 25 democratically elected Palestinian representatives demonstrates the true nature of Israel's commitment to not so democratic principles.'

Iran 57

De Amerikaanse onderzoeksjournalist Robert Dreyfuss schrijft:

'President Bush may or may not order a massive aerial bombardment of Iran later this year. Or he may wait until 2007. Or he may simply escalate a risky confrontation with Iran through covert action and economic sanctions. But whatever the next act in the crisis, don’t be fooled by the assertion that the problem is Iran’s pursuit of nuclear arms. Iran is a decade away from gaining access to the bomb, according to the administration’s own National Intelligence Estimate, and despite all the talk about the ugliness of the theocratic regime in Tehran, the likely showdown is, at bottom, driven by the geopolitics of oil. With one-tenth of the world’s petroleum reserves and one-sixth of its natural gas reserves, Iran sits in a strategic geographical position that makes it the cockpit for control of the entire Middle East. It straddles the Persian Gulf’s choke points, including the Strait of Hormuz; it has important influence among Shiites throughout Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf states; and it borders highly contested real estate to the north, from the Caucasus to the Caspian Sea to Central Asia. The logic of the Bush administration is inexorable. Its ironclad syllogism is this: The United States is and must remain the world’s preeminent power, if need be by using its superior military might. One of the two powers with the ability to emerge as a rival—China—depends vitally on the Persian Gulf and Central Asia for its future supply of oil; the other—Russia—is heavily engaged in Iran, Central Asia, and the Caucasus region. Therefore, if the United States can secure a dominant position in the Gulf, it will have an enormous advantage over its potential challengers. Call it zero-sum geopolitics: Their loss is our gain. Of course, the idea of the Persian Gulf as an American lake is not exactly new. Neoconservatives, moderate conservatives, “realists” typified by Henry Kissinger and James A. Baker, and liberal internationalists in the mold of President Carter’s national security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, mostly agree that the Gulf ought to be owned and operated by the United States, and the idea has been a cornerstone of U.S. policy under presidents both Republican and Democratic. Its adherents justified it in the past, however thinly, because of the exigencies of World War II and then the Cold War.But if the administration’s goals are congruent with past U.S. policy, its methods represent a radical departure. Previous administrations relied on alliances, proxy relationships with local rulers, a military presence that stayed mostly behind the scenes, and over-the-horizon forces ready to intervene in a crisis. President Bush has directly occupied two countries in the region and threatened a third. And by claiming a sweeping regional war without end against what he has referred to as “Islamofascism,” combined with an announced goal to impose U.S.-style free-market democracy in southwest Asia, he has adopted a utopian approach much closer to imperialism than to traditional balance-of-power politics.' Irak 100

Associated Press bericht: 'Insurgents offer to halt attacks in Iraq.

Eleven Sunni insurgent groups have offered an immediate halt to all attacks -- including those on American troops -- if the United States agrees to withdraw foreign forces from Iraq in two years, insurgent and government officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Withdrawal is the centerpiece of a set of demands from the groups, which operate north of Baghdad in the heavily Sunni Arab provinces of Salahuddin and Diyala. Although much of the fighting has been to the west, those provinces are increasingly violent and attacks there have crippled oil and commerce routes. The groups who've made contact have largely shunned attacks on Iraqi civilians, focusing instead on the U.S.-led coalition forces. Their offer coincides with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's decision to reach out to the Sunni insurgency with a reconciliation plan that includes an amnesty for fighters. The Islamic Army in Iraq, Muhammad Army and the Mujahedeen Shura Council -- the umbrella group that covers eight militant groups including al-Qaida in Iraq -- were not party to any offers to the government. Naseer al-Ani, a Sunni Arab politician and official with the largest Sunni political group, the Iraqi Islamic Party, said that al-Maliki should encourage the process by guaranteeing security for those making the offer and not immediately reject their demands. "The government should prove its goodwill and not establish red lines," al-Ani said. "If the initiative is implemented in a good way, 70 percent of the insurgent groups will respond positively." Al-Maliki, in televised remarks Wednesday, did not issue an outright rejection of the timetable demand. But he said it was unrealistic, because he could not be certain when the Iraqi army and police would be strong enough to make a foreign presence unnecessary for Iraq's security. In Washington, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said that President Bush's "view has been and remains that a timetable is not something that is useful. It is a signal to the enemies that all you have to do is just wait and it's yours."'

War Child stuurde me deze email: 'Over War Child.

Jose L. Gomez del Prado is a member of the United Nations Working Group on Mercenaries.

Hij schrijft: 'The 25 000 private security contractors presently working in Iraq constitute, after the United States Army, the largest force of occupation well before the British Army. These private security companies with over 420 deaths and some 4 000 injured, according to the USA Department of Labor, also yield the highest number of casualties with the exception of the US Army which has already reached over 2 500 deaths and more than 18 000 injuries.According to a report emanating from the USA Government Accountability Office, contracts for over $ 766 million have been awarded to private security companies in Iraq. Criticisms have been raised pointing out that, on the basis of such contracts, unethical mercenaries are being recruited complicating the reconstruction undertaken by the Coalition and receiving sometimes salaries up to several thousand dollars daily. In addition, these companies are accused of fraud and of overt confrontations with the US Army under which they should operate. With the globalisation of the economy, the use of force has become another business to be privatized. The privatized military and security industry which was estimated, in 1990, at $ 33 billion, reached in 2006 some $ 100 billion and will reach probably over $ 200 billion in 2010. During the first Gulf War, in the 1990’s, one out of every 100 soldiers was a private contractor. A few years later, during the former Yugoslavia’s wars the rate was one of every 50 and presently it is one out of every ten. The armed conflicts in former Yugoslavia, Angola, Colombia and Sierra Leone, among others, have favoured the expansion of such private companies. But it has been the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the instability that followed in the post war period in those two countries which has been the driving force in the extension and multiplication of the private military and security industry. It is also in those two countries where the limits of the grey zone, where these companies operate, which very easily becomes blurred: security activities and human rights violations are often inextricably linked. The thousands of armed contractors operating in Iraq represent one of the major problems in the reconstruction of the country for they carry out their activities without any control or accountability. Their behaviour is often similar to those of the employees of CACI and Titan working in the prison of Abu Ghraib. These two USA private security companies have been allegedly implicated in the 2004 human rights violations. The report of USA General Antonio Taguba indicates that two CACI employees were directly or indirectly implicated in the use of dogs on prisoners, forced sexual abuses and other types of violations perpetrated on prisoners. Another report suggests that one of the 27 employees of CACI working for the USA Army in Iraq knew pertinently that the instructions he was giving to the soldiers interrogating the prisoners was a form of torture. CACI sources argue that their personnel were at all times performing under military instructions. According to Titan their employees are translators and interpreters working for the USA Army and they were not implicated in the tortures committed on prisoners. The inquiries carried out to establish the implication of both of these two companies in the crimes committed in Abu Ghraib has not prevented the USA Government from renewing their contracts: one of some $ 15 million to CACI under which it will provide interrogating services with a view to obtaining information in Iraq and the other of $ 400 million to Titan to recruit more translators. At the time of the incidents in Abu Ghraib, the United States Government as Occupying Power had jurisdiction in Iraq. The fact that the human rights violations were allegedly perpetrated by employees of private security companies, such as CACI and Titan, does not exempt the USA Government of its obligations according to international human rights and international humanitarian law. However, contrary to the comments made by the US authorities to United Nations affirming that “contract personnel of the US are under the direction of the Coalition and are subject to criminal jurisdiction in US Federal Courts”, not one single civil employee allegedly implicated in the abuses perpetrated in Abu Ghraib has been investigated impartially by a US Federal Court or has been legally sanctioned. In the presentation of the 2006 Amnesty International report in Washington, the USA Director emphasized that United States were creating the equivalent of Guantanamo “- a virtual rule free zone in which perpetrators are not likely to be held accountable for breaking the law”. He said that “business outsourcing may increase efficiency, but war outsourcing may facilitate impunity”. He added that “illegal behavior of contractors and of those who designed and carried out U.S. torture policies and the reluctance of the government to bring perpetrators to justice are tarnishing the reputation of the United States, hurting the image of American troops and contributing to anti-American sentiment”.'

De Palestinian Center for Human Rights bericht: 'Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) Punish Palestinian Civilians in the Gaza Strip.

PCHR strongly condemns IOF retaliatory measures targeting Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, including the destruction of properties that are not classified as a legitimate military targets. The Centre calls upon the international community, particularly the High Contracting Parties of the Fourth Geneva Convention, to force IOF to respect the convention, which prohibits reprisals against protected persons, as stipulated in article 33. In addition, the convention prohibits the destruction of private properties belonging to individuals, groups, organizations or official bodies. The Centre calls upon the High Contracting Parties to enforce article 3 regarding adherence to the convention and respect of its stipulations, and to take appropriate sanctions against the serious violations currently being perpetrated.PCHR's preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 01:45 on Tuesday, 27 June 2006, IOF conducted a number of air raids using fighter jets and helicopter gunships on civilian installations in the Gaza Strip. The raids completely destroyed two bridges on the Gaza Valley, one on Salah El-Deen Road and the other on the coastal road. These two bridges connect the northern part of the Strip with the center and south. A secondary bridge was also destroyed. Transportation to and from the north of the Strip has been completely cut off as a result, threatening people's lives and security by depriving them access to health and educational institutions. The aerial bombardment also destroyed the main water pipe feeding Nuseirat and El-Bureij refugee camps. Furthermore, panic was caused among civilians, especially children and medical patients by bombardment, mock air raids and sonic booms over the Strip. In addition, IOF planes bombarded the Gaza Strip's only electricity generation plant, located to the north of Nuseirat refugee camp. Key sections of the plant were completely destroyed and fires broke out throughout the plant. The bombardment has cut electricity off for nearly half the population of the Gaza Strip. The bombardment destroyed the six main generators that provide 45% of the electricity needs of the Strip. Restoring the plant and resuming its operations could take up to 6 months and at a cost of approximately $15 million US.PCHR condemns the destruction of civilian property, which is considered to be a reprisal and collective punishment against civilians. These reprisals are in retaliation to the military operation conducted by the Palestinian resistance against a military outpost near Kerem Shalom crossing on 25 June 2006. In addition, the bombardment is a continuation of the war crimes being perpetrated by IOF against civilians, including the comprehensive siege on the Gaza Strip.PCHR calls upon the international community to provide protection for civilian lives and property, as stipulated in International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law.'

Defence for Children International bericht: 'Gaza civilians bear the brunt of Israeli military escalationDespite the completion of the Israeli military disengagement from the Gaza Strip on 12 September 2005, Israeli occupation forces have continued to exert their effective control over the territory of the Strip. Israel maintains control over all of Gaza 's borders, dictating who and what passes through, and over the supply of basic civilian infrastructure such as electricity and water. Moreover, Israel has aggressively tormented the population of the Gaza Strip through military assaults from the air, land and sea. These assaults, ostensibly to stop the launching into Israel of rockets by Gaza military factions, have largely taken the form of shelling and extrajudicial assassinations. Israel 's military assaults are often aimed the dense population centers of the Strip where it is virtually impossible to ensure compliance with the basic international humanitarian law principle of distinction between civilians and combatants. Since the end of the disengagement, shelling campaigns have claimed the lives of six children. A further 13 children, innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time, have been the victims of Israel 's extrajudicial assassinations.
Even while such military assaults have continued, Israeli official statements have repeatedly warned of the military's intention to carry out large-scale operations in the Gaza Strip. The capture of an Israeli soldier by three Palestinian military factions, Jaish al-Islam, Izeedeim al-Qassam Brigades (military wing of Hamas) and Alweyat Salah Al-Dein (military wing of Islamic Jihad) has proved a suitable opportunity for such an attack to be launched. After the soldier was taken prisoner on the morning of 25 June, Israeli occupation forces started to amass troops on the Israel/Gaza border. These troop movements were accompanied by a strengthening of the siege of Gaza : all border crossings in and out were closed, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis already evident in Gaza .
The period which was given by Israel to the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian military factions to hand over the captured Israeli soldier expired early Wednesday 28 June. Even beforehand, much of Gaza was hit by blackouts after Israeli air strikes targeted a main power station. Additional vital civilian infrastructure, including bridges, were targeted in contravention of Article 53 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949. Within hours of the deadline passing, Israeli troops re-entered districts of the southern Gaza Strip. Clashes have taken place in residential areas of Rafah and Israeli troops have used megaphones to order civilians to evacuate their homes. As if such events were not terrifying enough for civilians, especially children, they have been accompanied by deafening sonic booms as Israeli aircraft deliberately fly low over the region further traumatizing the population.
DCI/PS views with grave concern the reinvasion of Gaza by Israeli troops, and the tightening of the siege and calls on Israel to respect its obligations under international humanitarian law to prevent the unnecessary suffering of the civilian population. At the same time, DCI/PS calls on the Palestinian military factions to treat the captured Israeli soldier humanely according to the provisions of the Third Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
On behalf of the children of Gaza , DCI/PS calls on all concerned parties to respect the limitations placed on reprisals, particularly against persons protected by the four Geneva Conventions.' Lees verder: http://www.dci-pal.org/english/display.cfm?DocId=500&CategoryId=1

Lees verder:

Forbes bericht: Hamas Leaders Arrested; Israeli Executed.

Israeli forces rounded up Palestinian Cabinet ministers and lawmakers from the Islamic Hamas, increasing pressure on the Islamic militants to release a captured Israeli soldier, and witnesses said tanks moved into northern Gaza, widening Israel's largest military operation in the year since Israel pulled out of the seaside territory. Adding to the tension, a Palestinian militant group said it executed an 18-year-old Jewish settler kidnapped in the West Bank. Palestinian security officials said they believed the body of Eliahu Asheri had been found in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Palestinian security officials said Israeli forces detained the Palestinian deputy prime minister, Nasser Shaer, and three other Cabinet ministers, as well as four lawmakers in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Two others were arrested in the town of Jenin, they said, and Israeli media reported a roundup of Hamas lawmakers in Jerusalem and other locations. The military refused to comment. Israel blames Hamas for the attack Sunday in which two soldiers were killed and a third captured when militants tunneled under the border and attacked an army post, setting off the invasion. Before daybreak Thursday, witnesses said Israeli tanks and bulldozers moved into northern Gaza, stopping about 200 yards inside Palestinian territory across from the Jebaliya refugee camp. No clashes were reported. However, the miltiary denied its forces had moved into northern Gaza.' Lees verder:

Tomdispatch Interview: Bacevich on the Limits of Imperial Power.

[Note to Tomdispatch readers: This is the tenth in an ongoing series of interviews at the site. The last three interviews were with Chalmers Johnson (1 and 2), Katrina vanden Heuvel, and Mike Davis (1 and 2). Tom]

The Delusions of Global Hegemony.
A Tomdispatch Interview with Andrew Bacevich (Part 1)
I wait for him on a quiet, tree and wisteria-lined street of red-brick buildings. Students, some in short-sleeves on this still crisp spring morning, stream by. I'm seated on cold, stone steps next to a sign announcing the Boston University Department of International Relations. He turns the corner and advances, wearing a blue blazer, blue shirt and tie, and khaki slacks and carrying a computer in a black bag. He's white haired, has a nicely weathered face, and the squared shoulders and upright bearing of a man, born in Normal, Illinois, who attended West Point, fought in the Vietnam War, and then had a twenty-year military career that ended in 1992.
Now a professor of history at Boston University, he directs me to a spacious, airy office whose floor-to-ceiling windows look out on the picturesque street. A tasseled cap and gown hang on a hook behind the door -- perhaps because another year of graduation is not far off. I'm left briefly to wait while he deals with an anxious student, there to discuss his semester mark. Soon enough though, he seats himself behind a large desk with a cup of coffee and prepares to discuss his subjects of choice, American militarism and the American imperial mission.
Andrew Bacevich is a man on a journey -- as he himself is the first to admit. A cultural conservative, a former contributor to such magazines as the Weekly Standard and the National Review, a former Bush Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, he discovered sometime in the 1990s that his potential conservative allies on foreign policy had fallen in love with the idea of the American military and its imagined awesome power to change the world. They had jumped the tracks and left him behind. A professed cold warrior, in those years he took a new look at our American past -- and he's not stopped looking, or reconsidering, since.
What he discovered was the American empire, which became the title of a book he published in 2002. In 2005, his fierce, insightful book on American dreams of global military supremacy, The New American Militarism, How Americans Are Seduced by War, appeared. (It was excerpted in two posts at this site.) It would have been eye-opening no matter who had written it, but given his background it was striking indeed.
Forceful and engaged (as well as engaging), Bacevich throws himself into the topic at hand. He has a barely suppressed dramatic streak and a willingness to laugh heartily at himself. But most striking are the questions that stop him. Just as you imagine a scholar should, he visibly turns over your questions in his mind, thinking about what may be new in them.
He takes a sip of coffee and, in a no-nonsense manner, suggests that we begin.
Tomdispatch: In a Los Angeles Times op-ed, you said the revolt of the retired generals against Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld represented the beginning of a search for a scapegoat for the Iraq War. I wondered whether you also considered it a preemptive strike against the Bush administration's future Iran policy.
Andrew Bacevich: The answer is yes. It's both really. Certainly, it's become incontrovertible that the Iraq War is not going to end happily. Even if we manage to extricate ourselves and some sort of stable Iraq emerges from the present chaos, arguing that the war lived up to the expectations of the Bush administration is going to be very difficult. My own sense is that the officer corps -- and this probably reflects my personal experience to a great degree -- is fixated on Vietnam and still believes the military was hung out to dry there. The officer corps came out of the Vietnam War determined never to repeat that experience and some officers are now angry to discover that the Army is once again stuck in a quagmire. So we are in the early stages of a long argument about who is to be blamed for the Iraq debacle. I think, to some degree, the revolt of the generals reflects an effort on the part of senior military officers to weigh in, to lay out the military's case. And the military's case is: We're not at fault. They are; and, more specifically, he is -- with Rumsfeld being the stand-in for [Vietnam-era Secretary of Defense] Robert McNamara.' Lees verder:

De Israelische Terreur 48

Electronic Intifada: 'Escalation', 'retaliation' and BBC double standards in Gaza. Jonathan Cook

The killing by Palestinian militants of two Israeli soldiers and the capture of a third from an army post close to the Gaza Strip set the scene for Israeli “reprisals” and “retaliation”, according to the reports of BBC correspondents in Israel and Gaza at the weekend. The attack by the Palestinians, who sneaked through tunnels under the electronic fence surrounding Gaza, marked a “major escalation in cross-border tension” (Alan Johnston) that threatened to overturn “a week of progress on two fronts” (John Lyon): namely, the recent talks between Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan, and between rival Palestinian groups Fatah and Hamas. Thus, according to the BBC’s analysis, this attack ends the immediate chances for “peace” negotiations and provides the context for the next round of the conflict between the Israeli army and the Palestinians of Gaza. We are left to infer that all the suffering the army inflicts in the coming days and weeks should be attributed to this moment of “escalation” by the Palestinians. We can ignore the weeks of shelling by the Israeli army of Gaza, the firing of hundreds of missiles into the crowded Strip that have destroyed Palestinian lives and property, while spreading terror among the civilian population and deepening the psychological trauma suffered by a generation of children. We can ignore the deaths of more than 30 civilians, and dozens of horrific injuries, in the past few weeks at the hands of the Israeli military, including three children hit in a botched air strike last week, and a heavily pregnant woman and her doctor brother killed a day later as a missile slammed into the room where they were eating dinner. We can ignore the blockade of Gaza’s “borders” by the Israeli army for months on end, which has prevented Palestinians in the Strip from trading goods at crossing points with Israel and from receiving vital supplies of food and medicines. As a captive population besieged by Israeli soldiers, Gazans are facing a humanitarian catastrophe sanctioned by Israeli government policy and implemented by the Israeli army.We can ignore Israel’s bullying of the international community to connive in the starving of the Hamas-led government of funds and diplomatic room for manoeuvre, thereby preventing the elected Palestinian leadership from running Gaza. So desperate is the situation there that Hamas officials are being forced to smuggle in millions of dollars of cash stuffed in suitcases to pay salaries. And finally we can ignore the violation of Palestinian territory by Israeli commandos who infiltrated Gaza a day before the Palestinian attack to kidnap two Palestinians Israel claims are terrorists. They have been “disappeared”, doubtless to be be held in administrative detention, where they can denied access to lawyers, the courts and, of course, justice.' Israelisch Expansionisme 22

Hamas bowed to the combination of an ultimatum from the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, and relentless international pressure last night by committing itself for the first time to a two-state solution of the conflict with Israel.
In an important step towards the recognition of Israel sought from Hamas by the international community, the Islamic faction agreed to a deal intended to pave the way for a new coalition government which Mr Abbas hopes will bolster his standing as a potential partner for peace negotiations with Israel.
Faced with Mr Abbas's threat of a referendum next month on agreement to a two-state solution, Hamas agreed to a document based on that drawn up by a group of Fatah and Hamas prisoners which envisages a "final" settlement of the conflict with Israel. This is based on two states along the borders which existed before the 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.
The deal, initialled by negotiators yesterday and presented later to Mr Abbas and the Hamas Prime Minister, Ismail Haniyeh, provides for a new " national unity" government including Fatah, long committed to a two-state solution. Mr Abbas hopes the deal will start meeting the conditions set by the international community for lifting its economic blockade.' Lees verder:

Boycot Israel 2

The Palestinian Council for Higher Education Thanks British Academic Institutions
The Palestinian Council for Higher Education June 2006
The Palestinian Council for Higher Education sent a thankful letter to all academic institutions in Britain for their positive stand beside the Palestinians by boycotting the Israeli Academic Institutions for denouncing them the atrocities behaviors in the Occupied Palestinian Land. The Palestinian Council for Higher Education wrote:"Dear Colleagues,The Palestinian Council for Higher Education wishes to extend its sincere appreciation for your continuous support to the Palestinian cause which crystallized itself in the latest decision by the NATFHE to boycott Israeli academics as well as academic institutions that do not denounce Israeli atrocities committed in the occupied Palestine land.
We believe that this brave and honest stand taken by the NATFHE will further support the Palestinians in their rightful struggle towards achieving a just and lasting peace in the holy land. A peace that can only be realized through ending the occupation and that can offer stability, justice, and hope for the Palestinians in their independent state, in accordance with international law and legitimacy. We see in such a stand a clear message to all academics all over the world to take their role in opposing oppression and denouncing all acts committed against international law. It is our duty as academic community to be active players in making the world a better place and in delivering our voice in this rightful struggle. The decision of the Palestinian Council of Higher Education in banning cooperation with Israeli academics, researchers and institutions stems from the one simple fact, namely; the denial of the right of Palestinian academia to exercise free movement between their cities and villages and their ability to communicate freely with the outside world and the international academic community. This can only be achieved by ending the occupation. Let us also, use this opportunity to call upon the international academic and scientific communities to act positively towards ending the Israeli occupation, thus creating the environment for equal and fruitful cooperation. We strongly believe that by providing the positive environment, Palestinian people can contribute effectively to the well being and stability of this region. On our part, we will continue our mission in serving the Palestinian education sector and we will work on enhancing the role of the Palestinian curriculum in promoting social development and in protecting concepts of social harmony, diversity, and women's rights. The Palestinian education sector was and is still protective of the Palestinian cultural heritage. This has been our mission and will stay.We thank you again for this strong and daring stand.Sincerely,The Palestinian Council for Higher Education. Zie:

De Israelische Terreur 47

Electronic Intifada bericht: 'A Welcome Spotlight on Palestinian Child Prisoners. Catherine Hunter.

Kidnap, killings, and night raids on Israeli military army bases may not be the most effective way of reaching out to international opinion, but by conditioning the release of Israeli hostage Gilad Shalit on the release of some 380 Palestinian child prisoners, the Palestinian Popular Resistance Committees have touched on an issue which has resonance well beyond the immediate tit-for-tat killings and recriminations that have a tendency to dominate international media coverage of the 'Middle East conflict. The plight of Palestinian children arrested by the Israeli army has long been one of the neglected aspects of Israeli occupation, involving some 600 minors a year since the outbreak of the second Intifada in September 2000. Nearly all are held without access to legal support during questioning, often compelled to sign confessions in Hebrew, a language they don't understand, while subjected to intimidation and mistreatment as a matter of routine course. It starts with the arrest itself, which can take place during night-time incursions or mass arrest campaigns, or alternatively at the military checkpoints which have played such a part in curtailing the economic and social life of the West Bank. After a night or two behind bars, some minors are released without charge, while the unfortunate ones, around 300 a year, start their passage through the Israeli military justice system which stands as the rule of law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. This system allows no special provisions for minors, despite the fact that Israel is a signatory of numerous international treaties which demand due consideration for age in the legal process, not least of which is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Those considerations are, by contrast, applied to Israeli minors, including those living cheek by jowl with the Palestinians in illegal West Bank settlements.Life doesn't improve on the inside, with Palestinian children routinely reporting torture or mistreatment. In a typical recent case, Defence for Children International (DCI) defended two 13-year olds arrested for stone throwing near the 'separation barrier' in the South of the West Bank. The pair, Zakariyah and Nemer, were roughly handled on arrest, blindfolded and kicked, before being taken to a detention centre in the illegal settlement of Gush Etzion near Hebron. There, the boys spent 16 days in a small cell with up to 17 other people, sleeping on the floor and allowed access to the bathroom for half an hour once a day. The remaining 23 hours and 30 minutes were spent locked in the squalid cell, with no contact allowed with either friends or family.' Lees verder: http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article4856.shtml

Wie is Oscar Garschagen?

In 'An Inconvenient Truth' schrijft Al Gore: 'alongside the study of peerreviewed articles that showed 0% in disagreement with the consensus on global warming, another study was conducted of all the articles on global warming during the previous 14 years in the four newspapers considered by the authors of the study to be the most influential inAmerica: the New York Times, the Washington Post, the LA Times, and the Wall Street Journal... Astoundingly, they found that more than one-half gave equal wight to the consensus view on the one hand, and the scientifically discredited view that human beings play no role in global warming on the other. The authors concluded that American news media had been falsely "giving the impression that the scientific community was embroiled in a rip-roaring debate on whether or not humans were contributing to global warming." No wonder people are confused.'

In de jaren zestig schreef de tabaksindustrie een geheime memo: 'Doubt is our product, since it is the best means of competing with the "body of fact" that exists in the mind of the general public. It is also the means of establishing a controversy,' aldus Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company nadat de Surgeon General had gewaarschuwd voor het verband tussen roken en long kanker.

De Amerikaanse olie-industrie heeft eenzelfde strategie, zoals Gore schrijft, 'One of the internal memos prepared by this group to guide the employees they hired to run their disinformation campaign was discovered by the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Ross Gelbspan. Here was the group's stated objective: to "reposition global warming as theory, rather than fact."' Ziehier de geest van een misdadiger.
